The Michael Baker International Greater DC/MD operation has seen significant growth over the course of the last few years. Additionally, Michael Baker continues to expand its growing national transit design practice. To enable continued growth both locally and nationally, Michael Baker’s Baltimore, MD or Washington DC office seeks a Rail Track Engineer and Lead Client Manager who will be focused on growing the track engineering practice, managing technical work, mentoring junior staff, and fostering existing and new relationships with clients. The successful candidate will be making technical and business decisions for the track engineering practice in the region.

In this dynamic role, you will serve as a Rail Track Engineer and Lead Client Manager, supporting our current and future projects with your project management expertise and business development skills. Additionally, you will participate in local projects and pursuits for WMATA, MTA, Amtrak, and Class I Railroads, with support from our strong national Rail & Transit team. You will be an integral part of the team driving these major infrastructure projects and expanding our growing portfolio.
We are looking for a leader who will participate in the office leadership team while collaborating with counterparts nationwide to deliver high-quality engineering services. You will be involved in developing and implementing business strategies, working with project teams, and expanding Michael Baker’s project and client portfolio.
Actively participate in business development opportunities both locally and nationally.
Grow relationships with clients, consultant partners, and industry professionals.
Design, direct, and manage rail-related components of passenger, freight, and commuter rail projects.
Develop and oversee the design of track alignments, including special track work such as turnouts, crossovers, and diamond crossings.
Prepare and direct detailed engineering plans using industry-standard software.
Contribute to the development and review of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for Rail Design projects.
Lead younger staff and assist on large multi-disciplinary design teams.
Conduct engineering investigations, including feasibility and risk analysis studies.
Perform track and site inspections during construction and maintenance to ensure compliance with FRA, AREMA, and other regulations.
Coordinate with multiple disciplines to ensure conformance to design criteria, standards, and codes.
Assist in developing the rail portion of large multi-discipline project pursuits.
Flexible location and/or remote work based on experience level.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in civil, transportation, mechanical engineering, or related field.
8-10+ years of experience on various rail projects.
PE license required; NCEES registration a plus.
Experience with Class I Railroad design is a plus.
Experience with Commuter/Transit Agencies is a plus.
Thorough knowledge of and practical experience applying AREMA standards.
Excellent client management skills and ability to develop strong relationships.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Strong work ethic and integrity.
Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Availability to travel occasionally to other offices and sites.
Experience reviewing construction plans and specifications.
