Our modern cloud platform development is under way, and we are advancing our next generation services using a variety of new technologies like micro-services, progressive web apps, machine learning, cloud-native and more. We’re looking for software development leaders with an entrepreneurial mindset who are passionate about innovating on behalf of customers, demonstrate a high degree of product ownership, and want to have fun doing it.
This role will lead the software development effort of building key components of HMH’s next generation services vision. You will have an enormous opportunity to impact the customer experience, design, architecture, and implementation of a cutting edge ed-tech product that supports the training experiences for hundreds of thousands of teachers. As a Manager, Software Development you will be responsible for building and leading a team of software developers in design, development, testing, and deployment of key capabilities for the services team. A successful candidate will have an established background of building SaaS applications, with extensive technical knowledge of development techniques and latest practices in building scalable SaaS platforms and web applications. You are a leader with progressive technical experience, a demonstrated progression of management scope, and a passion for managing software development talent in a fast-paced environment. You have kept your software architecture skills sharp and possess exceptional project management and communication skills. Primary Responsibilities People Manager Enable and empower people to do their best work in an environment that encourages collaboration and innovation and fosters development and learning. Translate the company’s strategic vision, align group’s work, and help individuals understand their impact on HMH’s success. Assess direct reports’ performance and partner on career planning. Collaborate and be a catalyst, breaking down complex problems into simple solutions and leading through change. Manager Software Engineering Work collaboratively as part of a software development team producing software that advances our core mission. Eagerly learn and apply new cutting edge technologies. Contribute to our software development culture and ever-improving concept of engineering best practices. Oversee a team up to 12 software developers by guiding/mentoring team members. Promote software development best practices, agile maturity, monitor team performance and gather team metrics. Excellence in execution – Individual & Team Performance Ensure that team utilization is efficient, appropriate, and team members are assigned to tasks that allow them to further develop a wide variety of skills and abilities while ensuring strategic and operational business goals are fulfilled. Contribute to program/ product planning, resourcing, scheduling, budgeting, and delivery; taking responsibility and accountability for the Software Development team deliveries. Risk and Issues Management - identify issues/ events that may impact resources, schedule, budget, scope and/ or delivery.
Escalate risks and issues to appropriate parties in a timely manner and provide recommendations on problem-solving. Continuous Improvement - demonstrate a continuous improvement philosophy identifying areas for improvement including process innovation, tooling, etc. in pursuit of simplicity, quality and innovation. Education and Experience BS in Computer Science or related technical field and/or 5+ years comparable Industry experience Knowledge and Skills Expert level of proficiency with at least one Object Oriented Programming Language. Expert understanding of project tracking and Software development methodologies (Agile/Scrum/Test Driven Development). Experience leading and directing a multi-disciplined software development team. Knowledge of Spring Boot and micro-services. Knowledge of container technologies such as Docker. Interest in technologies like Mesos, Aurora, Kubernetes and cloud environments such as AWS. Ability to work under short deadlines and co-ordinate development schedules and project deliverables. Good French and English professional communication skills. Physical Requirements Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time
(sitting and/or standing). The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
