About the Facility: Murfreesboro VAMC The Murfreesboro VA Medical Center (VAMC), part of the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, is a comprehensive healthcare facility dedicated to serving U.S. military veterans. Located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, it provides a wide array of services, including primary care, mental health support, specialized treatment for conditions like PTSD, and long-term rehabilitation. The center offers inpatient and outpatient care, including specialized programs for geriatrics and extended care for older veterans. Medical Technologist - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)
The Medical Technologist performs patient/unit blood compatibility testing and issues compatible blood products if required. Independently operate high-complexity laboratory equipment according to department needs. Conduct proper patient identification (using 2 identifiers) and explain the methods of procedures, including special collection instructions, to obtain the best possible laboratory results. Coverage is required in specimen processing, hematology, chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, basic microbiology, and the blood bank. Perform phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture and capillary collections, on patients of all age groups. Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment according to manufacturer guidelines and standard laboratory protocols. The Medical Technologist maintains a quality control system for daily laboratory operations. Perform a variety of routine to highly complex tests, including but not limited to hematology, chemistry, blood banking, urinalysis, serology, reference testing, and microbiology. Maintain records for all laboratory functions, including equipment repairs, surveys, and testing documentation. Communicate effectively with staff, including notifying them of any equipment repairs or downtime. Maintain accurate daily records of patient workload and examinations. The Medical Technologist assists in emergency situations such as cardiac arrests, including performing CPR and recognizing/responding to anaphylaxis.

Medical Technologists/Medical Lab Scientists: Must have a bachelor's degree and AMT/ASCP certification. Medical Lab Technicians: Must have an associate's degree and AMT/ASCP certification. Must have a minimum of one year's experience.
