Departmental Overview The Office of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) provides guidance and services that promote health, safety, and environmental stewardship on campus. EH&S is committed to a dynamic, inclusive, and service‑oriented culture that values continuous learning and operational excellence.
Position Summary As the Designated Campus Fire Marshal (DCFM), you will serve under the California Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) to facilitate plan approval and construction field inspections of UC Berkeley projects. The DCFM acts as an authorized agent of OSFM and leads fire‑and‑life‑safety review of major capital construction projects.

Responsibilities
Review construction plans and specifications for compliance with applicable codes; ensure all documents receive the required approval stamp before Regents funding and, when appropriate, delay or stop construction.
Maintain targeted rechargeable hours within the fiscal year through efficient organization and workflow management.
Perform construction inspections and acceptance testing of fire protection systems, fire‑rated assemblies, and egress systems.
Grant fire clearance after meeting all requirements.
Drive university vehicles as required.
Maintain knowledge of current regulations and proposed changes across all subject areas.
Develop procedures, recommend policies, and draft reports using scientific and professional standards.
Provide technical guidance to EH&S staff and other departments on compliance programs.
Support UC system–wide technical workgroups and maintain liaison with regulatory agencies.
Participate in the Urgent Response Support Program (URSP) and serve on the Fire Emergency Response Support Team (FERST) as needed, including after‑hours duty.
Act as primary contact for UC Police Department and municipal emergency units during assigned rotations.
Respond to fire scenes, perform cause and origin investigations, maintain incident logs, and prepare investigation reports.
Provide emergency response during campus disasters or hazardous material releases as directed.
Staff Development
Serve on committees, receive formal and informal coaching, and engage in regular training and conference attendance.
Required Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of fire and life safety and familiarity with all EH&S fields.
Expert knowledge of California Code of Regulations (Title 19 and Title 24, Parts 1‑9), National Fire Codes, and related local, state, and federal standards.
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen.
Ability to represent the organization to state and federal authorities and community groups.
Advanced analytical and organizational skills for managing projects within budget and time constraints.
Experience mentoring or overseeing technical staff.
Proficiency with technology and relevant scientific equipment.
Completion of SFM Fire Investigation 1A course within six months of hire (or equivalent).
Ability to wear an N‑95 respirator for protection from soot and airborne combustion particulates.
Availability for early mornings, evenings, weekends, or as directed.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience and training.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional certification.
Completion of State Fire Marshal’s Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D courses (or equivalent).
Completion of the Statutes and Regulations course offered by the California State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Salary & Benefits The University of California, Berkeley’s annual salary range for this exempt position is $101,600.00 to $145,700.00, commensurate with experience. Salary offers are based on final candidate qualifications.
This is a monthly‑paid, exempt position.
