187 Supervises: Primary Purpose:
To assist in the implementation of students' Individualized Educational Plan. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Associates Degree, 48 Semester Hours, or Academic Assessment High School Diploma or GED Special Knowledge Skills: Experience: Some experience working with children. Temperament to work with aggressive/mentally ill students. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with teachers, students, and administrators. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate. Major Responsibilities and Duties: Exercise initiative in developing creative activities to supplement and reinforce learning. Assist the students in transferring to and from different locations, as needed. Assist students in self-help needs such as toileting, diapering, feeding, and positioning. Assist the young adults with coats and other articles of clothing which can be difficult for students with disabilities. Assist the teacher in creating an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Assist the teacher in material and room maintenance. Conduct group activities. Observe, record, and graph student behavior. Assist with bulletin board decorations. Assist in grading papers and recording scores. Administer rewards to pupils under the direction of the teacher. Maintain the program in the absence of the teacher and with the assistance of a substitute teacher aide. Perform all other duties as requested by the teacher, the supervisor, or the principal. Attend parent group sessions if invited by the teacher. Assist the teacher or other supervisory personnel in making home visits. Be subject to bus monitor assignment. Utilize Crisis Prevention Intervention techniques. Maintain confidentiality of students’ testing, diagnosis, status, and family issues. Monitor students during lunch and transitions. Exercise patience, consistency, fairness, and respect of students regardless of their behavior. Accompany students to mainstream settings. Attend and meet required district hours of staff development. Perform basic operations on the computer. Assist the teacher with instructional activities. Refer parental/staff complaints to the teacher, building principal, or special education supervisor. Refer questions about the program and students in the program to the teacher. Interact with coworkers, parents, and students with dignity and respect. Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Special Education. Supervisory Responsibilities: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent districtwide travel. Occasional prolonged or irregular hours. Must be able to lift 120 lbs. occasionally with assistance.
