Performs all duties and responsibilities of Level I plus additional responsibilities for the Float role in multiple operating room specialty service areas. Maintains sterile technique, assembles and handles specialty instrumentation, and ensures proper sterilization practices. Performs surgical counts and reports discrepancies; establishes and maintains sterile fields and monitors drug/solution labeling and quantities. Assists in preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens; plans and sets up instruments, supplies, and drapes for procedures. Assists the surgeon with anatomy and procedural considerations; prepares cases and plans instrument needs; communicates changes to care team. Responds to surgical emergencies and follows hospital emergency plans; participates in scheduling, planning, and optimization of instrument needs. Manages inventory, receives and restocks supplies in Surgical Services areas. Mentors new hires and participates in orientation and evaluation processes. Identifies and reports defective instruments or equipment and assists with restocking operating/procedure rooms and sub-sterile areas. Supports the RN during intraoperative nursing practice and participates in data collection for research under RN direction. Operates complex equipment and troubleshooting as needed in the OR. Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED; graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program; or graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; or equivalent experience (5+ years) in surgical tech as substitution. Licensure/Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider; Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery (TS-C) certification. Experience: 3+ years of relevant professional experience. Knowledge/Skills: Successful completion of UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies for service lines; strong communication and customer service; excellent organizational and priority-setting skills; ability to function as a mentor and team player; on-call may be required.
