It has an annual operating budget between $1.5M–$2M, 16 staff members, and is governed by a highly committed Board of Trustees. Since 1978, Adirondack Roots has helped thousands of people in the eastern Adirondacks establish lasting homes and communities.
The Opportunity The Executive Director (ED) of Adirondack Roots is responsible for overall strategic, operational, and financial leadership of the organization. The ED will work closely with the Board of Directors, staff, stakeholders, and local communities to fulfill the organization’s mission of providing affordable housing solutions to Adirondack communities. Amid growing regional focus on housing, the Executive Director will build on Adirondack Roots’ financial strength and reputation for excellence to expand the organization’s resources and deepen its impact in the community.
Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, mission‑driven leader with experience in and a passion for affordable housing and non‑profit leadership. They will bring proven expertise in organizational management, fundraising, and strategic planning, along with the ability to inspire collaboration among staff, board, and community partners. With a clear vision and strong sense of purpose, the Executive Director will lead Adirondack Roots into its next growth phase, enhancing its impact and strengthening its connection to the region it serves.
Required Qualifications
Experience: Minimum of 7–10 years of senior leadership experience, including at least 5 years in a nonprofit organization, preferably in housing, urban development, or community development.
Knowledge of Housing Issues: Familiarity with affordable housing policies, financing, regulations, and community development strategies.
Leadership: Proven ability to lead teams, inspire staff, and collaborate with stakeholders.
Development Expertise: Experience in securing funding through grants, individual donations, corporate sponsorships, and public sector resources.
Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of nonprofit financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
Communication Skills: Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences.
Strategic Program Development: Demonstrated ability to develop and implement programs, policies, and strategic initiatives that drive mission‑driven success.
Mission Driven: A deep passion for housing, community development, and the Adirondack region.
Compensation $95,000 – $105,000 annually. Compensation is based on the successful candidate’s educational background, experience, and skills.
Location In‑person role in Elizabethtown, NY (Eastern Adirondacks).
