Psychiatric Technician (2305) – San Francisco Dept. of Public Health The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is hiring Psychiatric Technicians for multiple positions at all DPH facilities, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital & Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital & Rehabilitation Center, community primary care and mental health clinics, and San Francisco County Jails. Candidates may be required to work in locked jails, psychiatric facilities, with the homeless population, or with individuals who are carriers of infectious/communicable diseases. Part‑time, evenings, nights, weekends, rotating, and/or holiday shifts may be required.

Under the direction of a licensed physician, registered nurse, or clinical supervisor, the Psychiatric Technician performs professional therapeutic procedures in the care and treatment of severely and persistently mentally ill and emotionally disturbed patients.

Responsibilities

Provides basic general and psychiatric nursing care and works with an interdisciplinary treatment team to develop an overall treatment program for the patient.

Administers medications and treatments, including oral medications, injections, and enemas, takes and charts vital signs under supervision.

Observes patients’ condition and behavior, reports significant changes to supervisor or physician, and documents care and treatments in nursing progress notes.

Creates a safe and therapeutic environment, recognizes early symptoms/signs of escalation, uses crisis intervention, verbal de‑escalation, and alerts other team members.

Implements therapeutic activities, documents patient participation, and assists rehabilitation therapists in occupational and recreational therapies for patients.

Motivates patients to develop independence in activities of daily living, assists with feeding, clothing, toileting, ensures safe practices that protect patients and others from personal injury.

Receives visitors, encourages their interest in the patients’ wellbeing and treatment plan, escorts patients on the facility premises and to and from the community, orders supplies, keeps records, and participates in orientation and in‑service training programs.

Participates in the discharge process.

Qualifications

Possession of a valid Psychiatric Technician license issued by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (current license status).

Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification issued by the American Heart Association.

Strong communication, patient care, and crisis intervention skills.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in fast‑paced, high‑stress environments.

Special Conditions

Some positions may require bilingual fluency; candidates must pass the bilingual proficiency test and indicate the language(s) of proficiency on the application.
