Job Title:

CheckPoint Network Engineer Location: Rockville, MD Position: 06+ Months Contract

Under the supervision of the Manager of Network Engineering & Operations, the Network Engineer is responsible for:

Planning, design, implementation, organization, and operation of the company’s Cisco‑based data communications network and network security devices; simultaneously working on the successful engineering, testing, and deployment of multiple large to small projects.

Planning, design, implementation, and operation of the company’s Checkpoint Firewalls based perimeter security network and network security devices including VPN; simultaneously working on the successful engineering, testing, and deployment of multiple projects.

Planning, design, and implementation of VPN connectivity between client and 3rd‑party vendors.

Troubleshooting network, VPN, and firewall problems, specifically Checkpoint GAIA and Cisco ASA.

Be a subject matter expert on network, VPN, and firewall related issues.

Essential Job Functions

In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP and communication protocols, including IPSec, GRE tunnels, multicasting, and traffic balancing techniques.

Ability to troubleshoot complex multi‑vendor network issues in LAN and WAN networks and work with application and system teams to identify bottlenecks and configuration issues.

In‑depth knowledge of deep packet troubleshooting with Wireshark and/or Riverbed ACE Analyst and tcpdump.

Plan and conduct complex project studies; analyze multiple data sources and publish results to the team or to the technical user community.

Hands‑on experience with all phases of firewall and network operations, firewall change requests, configuration, network services, and network security for the client.

Monitor firewall and network systems to identify and solve data communication problems and user performance issues.

Work independently while maintaining strong team collaboration.

Education / Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, information systems, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent work experience and formal training.

At least 5+ years of experience in firewall administration, network & information security, network administration, systems programming, systems design, or related technical specialties.

Experience managing and administering network and firewall changes is a bonus.

Knowledge of network routing (BGP, EIGRP), switching protocols, multicast & QoS protocols, Cisco hardware routers and switches; hands‑on experience with Cisco Nexus switches is a plus.

Advanced experience with Checkpoint Firewalls and Checkpoint Provider‑1 R75.47 & R77.20 is required.

Experience with Checkpoint GAIA is preferred.

Enhanced certification in Checkpoint Firewalls (CCSA/CCSE/CCMSE) desired.

Excellent analytical, organizational, time‑management, and problem‑solving skills.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with executives, vendors, and department staff.

Verbal communication skills required for interaction with requestors and network and firewall outsourcers technical staff.

Working Conditions Work is normally performed in an office environment. Extended hours and weekend work may be required as this is a 24×7 operations environment. Occasional travel may be required.
