Senior Accountant/Assistant Controller

As an integral member of the Finance team, the Senior Accountant/Assistant Controller will support the agency-wide finance functions, ensuring timely and accurate billing, budgeting, forecasting, audits, and reporting. The role requires a collaborative team player who works closely with program, administrative, and executive staff and may be assigned additional finance projects as needed.
Primary Responsibilities
Timely and accurate contract accounting for government contracts and foundation grants.
Prepare and file regulatory submissions (claims, budgets, budget modifications, close‑outs, advances).
Ensure the integrity of financial results for contracts and grants, including revenues, receivables, earned unbilled, and advances, and produce related journal entries and reconciliations.
Monitor and follow up on outstanding receivable balances to maximize cash flow.
Provide financial support for transactions, budgets, and monthly reporting, including variance reports.
Generate monthly contract and grant status reports for management.
Collaborate with the Director of Finance and Program Directors to update and analyze budgets and forecasts throughout the year.
Conduct periodic contract compliance audits, gather required documentation, and submit reports to grantors on time.
Analyze account charges to facilitate optimal fund utilization.
Develop schedules for accounting activities.
Maintain managerial accounting records.
Complete financial contract accounting records accurately.
Other Duties Assist the Director of Finance and executive staff with ad hoc finance projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting and at least 5 years of relevant experience.
Paying attention to detail, analytical thinking, developing and recommending solutions, and the ability to prioritize and complete tasks on a timely basis in a fast‑paced environment.
Good operational accounting experience required, preferably including budgeting, forecasting and variance reporting.
Good professional written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills — ability to relate and clearly communicate with operating management, financial staff and other departments.
Good skills in Excel, Word and enterprise-wide accounting applications.
Strong work ethic, sense of urgency in task completion, willingness to work a flexible schedule and commitment to the mission of Marks JCH.
Preferred Experience
Non‑profit government contracting experience involving NYS and NYC contracts.
Experience with FundEZ Financial System.
Salary $75,000 - $85,000
annually.
