Associate General Counsel

Background / IRC Summary IRC’s Office of General Counsel, reporting to the President and CEO, provides legal advice and guidance to IRC management and the Board of Directors on a wide range of matters affecting the IRC and its affiliated entities. Responsibilities include employment issues, governance, contracting, requests for information, policy formulation, internal compliance, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The Office also oversees domestic and international litigation and manages relationships with outside counsel.
Job Overview / Summary The Associate General Counsel is a full-time position based in New York with hybrid in-person and remote work. This role works with the General Counsel and other staff in the General Counsel’s Office, providing legal advice on matters pertaining to operational departments such as People & Culture, international humanitarian and development programs, domestic refugee resettlement offices, and headquarters functions.
Primary responsibilities include advising on employee benefits and employment law throughout the employment life cycle, supporting labor negotiations and collective bargaining agreements, responding to litigation and regulatory inquiries, drafting and negotiating contracts, maintaining governance policies, supporting internal IRC departments, conducting legal research, delivering compliance training, and undertaking special projects as assigned.
Primary Responsibilities
Provide expertise and advice in employee benefits and employment law at all stages of the employment life cycle, including ERISA-qualified plans.
Support labor negotiations and develop, implement, and administer collective bargaining agreements.
Work with external counsel and internal clients to respond to litigation and regulatory inquiries, including employment-related litigation.
Draft, review, and negotiate legal contracts and documents, such as service, licensing, non-disclosure, fundraising, consultant, procurement, data sharing, and other commercial contracts.
Assist in maintaining governance policies and conduct legal compliance reviews of grant and other funding materials.
Provide continued support to internal departments (People & Culture; Crisis Response, Recovery & Development; Resettlement, Asylum, and Integration; Finance; Private Fundraising/Global Partnerships and Philanthropy; Global Supply Chain; program offices).
Conduct background information and legal research as appropriate.
Develop and deliver training on legal and regulatory compliance matters.
Occasional domestic and international travel as needed.
Perform other job-related duties, research various issues, and undertake special projects as assigned by the General Counsel or Deputy General Counsels.

Job Requirements
Graduate of an accredited law school, admitted to practice in good standing with New York State; 4‑7 years of legal practice required, including experience in a U.S. law firm, in‑house, or comparable setting.
Background in employee benefits and/or traditional labor law strongly preferred.
Experience with labor negotiations and administration of collective bargaining agreements.
Excellent contract drafting and negotiating skills.
Expertise in legal research and excellent writing skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills; effectively communicating and collaborating in an international, multicultural environment.
Solid organizational skills; able to plan and manage multiple projects and a wide‑ranging workload in a fast‑paced environment.
Experience working with exempt organizations strongly preferred.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, and related software.

Compensation Pay Range: $135,000 – $150,000 (U.S.‑based candidates). Exact offers are calibrated by location, experience, and skills relative to defined job requirements.
