Overview
Receives logs in verifies label accuracy and sends laboratory test specimens to appropriate section of lab. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy policies procedures and standards.
Working hours: Friday and Saturday nights, 10:30pm-7:00am onsite at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Receives specimens for tests, verifies label accuracy, determines sufficiency, logs in specimen, prepares for delivery to appropriate section or contractor.
Enters data into computer concerning time of collection, receipt, and patient identity; generates reports on specific patients or patient groups, master log, and outstanding specimens.
Notifies supervisor or appropriate laboratory or nursing unit personnel when specimens are damaged, contaminated, or otherwise unsuitable for all tests; arranges for suitable tests or new specimen as appropriate.
Prioritizes STAT specimens and transports them promptly to the respective divisions.
Prepares and provides special containers with preservatives to hospital staff and out-patients for special tests.
Interacts with medical personnel to provide results, answer routine queries, and obtain or clarify information.
Maintains a safe and orderly work environment and follows all safety and regulatory procedures for the assigned laboratory.
Participates in orientation training, continuing education programs, or other opportunities for learning for the department medical staff and other hospital staff as delegated.
Performs other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and is not to be considered all inclusive.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Diploma or GED, required.
Experience: Some laboratory or related work experience, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Able to learn and apply basic laboratory specimen processing techniques; able to learn or has a working knowledge of basic specimen requirements for a wide variety of laboratory tests.
Able to learn to work basic laboratory equipment and moderately complex computer functions.
Able to remain calm and function in stressful situations.
Compensation This position has a hiring range of USD $19.55 - USD $34.25 /Hr.
