Moffatt & Nichol is actively seeking a Structural Engineer with 10 to 15+ years of experience with bridge, transportation, and/or rail structure projects. As the successful new hire, you will possess strong design and communication skills and be able to lead tasks and interact with clients. You may be seated in either our: Costa Mesa (preferred), Long Beach, or Ontario offices. Our SoCal bridge team provides a wide variety of structural transportation services to Caltrans, cities, and counties in the area including concrete bridge design, steel bridge design, bridge widening and replacement, grade separations, structural assessment and rehabilitation, seismic retrofit, pump stations, underground structures, and retaining walls. Firm‑wide, our bridge practice provides design and inspection services both domestically and internationally. We have worked on some of the most iconic bridges in the USA.

Duties and responsibilities

Lead project conceptualization, bridge design (preliminary and final), plan development, project implementation, and project controls

Understand and maintain proficiency with Caltrans and local agency design standards and criteria, practices, and policies

Knowledge and understanding of rail bridge design based on AREMA manuals and UPRR/BNSF guidelines

Mentor and review engineer's design work

Write and coordinate bridge and rail‑related technical reports, plans, cost estimates, specifications, and proposals

Work collaboratively with Bridge and Rail Team and all company disciplines

Assist in construction support

Function independently performing technical design tasks

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. Master's degree in Structural Engineering strongly preferred

Professional Engineer registration in the State of California or eligible to obtain within 6 months; Structural Engineer licensure a plus

10 to 15+ years of experience in leading design tasks, bridge structural and seismic analysis, planning, design (new and rehabilitative), and preparation of construction drawings and contract documents for highway and/or railroad bridge projects

Steel bridge design experience is a plus

Bridge, rail, and site inspection experience desirable

Knowledge of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), local municipal, and county design standards and criteria, practices, and policies strongly desired

Proficiency in SAP2000, CSI Bridge, CTBridge, Xtract, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation preferred

Additional design experience with other states and with load rating of bridges is desirable

Strong written and verbal communication/coordination skills

All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre‑employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Base salary range $112,700 to $148,800 based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting required qualification in job description.

Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in California.

Working conditions The work takes place in both the office and the field which may require occasional extended hours or weekends to meet deadlines. Inclement weather may occur. Working remotely might be approved for a maximum of two days per week on a case‑by‑case basis.

Physical requirements Must be able to navigate field to inspect bridges and rail. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Perform office work or attend meetings. Light local travel as necessary.
