Job Summary This position provides direct patient care services and performs medical procedures under the supervision of a supervising physician for patients aged birth through 21 in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit of the Duke University Health System (DUHS). Responsibilities include physical exams, data collection and documentation, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering of laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribing interventions and medications, and providing direct patient care services.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

In collaboration with attending physicians and fellows, conduct daily rounds on patients to assess, diagnose, plan treatment, set realistic priorities, and evaluate the effectiveness and cost efficiency of patient care.

Provide and coordinate clinical care for service‑specific patients through established protocols under the supervising physician.

Collaborate with fellows, attendings, APPs, nurses, and patient resource managers to formulate treatment plans and monitor patient progress.

Perform procedures specific to the work environment after demonstrating competency and within scope of practice and credentialing protocols.

Assess patients for changes in status, elevate concerns, and initiate appropriate interventions; initiate emergency interventions to stabilize the patient.

Post‑procedural stabilization and management.

Develop patient care pathways, protocols, and guidelines for managing specific problems in conjunction with the supervising physician and the healthcare team.

Communicate verbally and in writing all pertinent patient information to the supervising MD, nursing staff, patient resource manager, home health agency, and other relevant healthcare providers.

Document in the patients' medical records all relevant data, including diagnostic test results, laboratory results, patient condition and response to therapies/interventions, and communications with the supervising MD.

Prescriptive authority for prescribing, ordering, and/or administering drugs, including Schedule II–V drugs and necessary medical devices.

Provide daily handoff to the appropriate attending, APP, or fellow at the end of the shift.

Assess educational needs of the patient‑care staff and provide one‑on‑one and formal education as needed.

Provide culturally sensitive patient/family education interventions; use non‑technical language and document all education in patients' medical records.

Offer expertise and resource information to other healthcare providers, patients, families, and the community regarding pediatric diseases, procedures, interventions, and conditions.

Maintain all professional requirements for licensure and certification.

Job Eligibility Requirements Education

MD or DO graduate from an accredited medical school program with completion of Pediatrics or combined Pediatrics/Internal Medicine Residency.

Licensure

Unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB.

Federal and State prescriptive authority (DEA license).

Certification

ABP board‑eligible recent or pending graduates may also apply.

BLS and PALS mandatory before hire.

Experience Candidates early in their career or finishing their Pediatric or Med‑Peds residency, interested in gaining additional experience in Pediatric Cardiology and/or Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, are encouraged to apply.

Job Hours Position includes 11 × 12‑hour shifts per month from 7 p.m.–7 a.m., including weeknight and weekend night shifts.
