Senior Server Administrator Full Time | 100% | San Francisco, CA (Mission Center Building)

Job Summary The Senior Server Administrator will drive the day-to-day maintenance and operations of on-premises and virtual servers to ensure stability and security of the University of California, San Francisco's (UCSF) computing environment. The role will coordinate server needs across a broad range of customers, partners, and key stakeholders in administrative and academic units.

As a technical subject‑matter expert, the Administrator will provide training assistance, technical mentorship, and act as a point of contact for complex infrastructure issues. Responsibilities include supporting hypervisor deployment and configuration, maintaining day‑to‑day operations of centralized, distributed, physical, and virtual servers, and ensuring UCSF’s IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of its academic mission.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. The salary range for this position is $138,000–$183,000 (Annual Rate). Department Description University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading academic health‑care organization that delivers world‑class education, advanced research, and exceptional patient care. Infrastructure Services (IS) is the backbone of the technological infrastructure, providing 24x7 support and ensuring secure, efficient IT services. The Platform Services team manages a range of platforms—system, cloud, and critical software like Epic—while overseeing data center operations, server management, storage, networking, and database security to support UCSF’s mission.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in computer science, engineering, computer information systems, or related fields.

3 to 5+ years of experience with virtualization technologies, server administration (Windows and Linux), and information technology.

Extensive experience installing, configuring, modifying, and supporting hypervisors, Windows and Linux operating systems.

Experience with platform automation and orchestration methodologies and tools.

Experience monitoring, auditing, tuning, and optimizing system performance, security, capacity planning, patching, and upgrades.

Proven ability to interpret, analyze, and apply service‑level agreements, policies, and procedures into actionable outcomes.

Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions to improve or correct performance.

Advanced knowledge of system problem identification and resolution, including design, configuration, operation, repair, tracking, and tuning of technology systems.

Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies and tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Chef, or Puppet, and scripting languages associated with IaC tools.

Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies, including experience securing complex server‑based software.

Strong customer‑service skills, with the ability to triage and escalates issues.

Strong written and verbal communication skills to convey technical information to diverse stakeholders.

Ability to build positive relationships with team members, stakeholders, and customers.

Strong organizational skills and experience managing competing priorities and concurrent projects using leading project‑management practices.

Strong problem‑solving skills, with the ability to scope solutions based on resources and timelines.

Creativity and agility to propose innovative ideas and work efficiently in a fast‑paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Server Certification (Microsoft, Red Hat).

CompTIA Server+ or equivalent.

VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or equivalent.

Citrix Certified Associate – Virtualization (CCA‑V) or equivalent.
