The Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) has been advancing oral health in the state and beyond since 1879, when it was founded as the Indiana Dental College. Our goal as a department at IUSD is to build off Indiana's longstanding history of leadership in the areas of cariology, preventive, operative and community dentistry. Our department brings together those responsible for the diagnosis, risk assessment, and both surgical and non-surgical management of dental hard tissue diseases and conditions, both at the patient and population level, creating the environment to vertically and horizontally integrate our teaching as well as our research and service efforts.

Job Summary

  • Determines data needs for the research mission by meeting with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Queries appropriate databases to generate data sets, to retrieve relevant information needed for research purposes that are in compliance with appropriate IRB and HIPAA requirements.
  • Develops and applies all aspects of the use of natural-language processing (NLP) in software.
  • Develops and applies algorithms on data in NLP areas.
  • Performs research and development of NLP software tools.
  • Coding, testing, and debugging multifaceted and complex software for NLP projects.
  • Processes data requests from clinical, educational, and administrative systems for research, education, and patient care purposes.
  • Transfers datasets to secure portals and monitors its appropriate use by faculty, students, and staff.
  • Develops shares data reports and charts through Tableau visualization and other programs.
  • Performs data mining using tools such as SQL and MS Access connected to databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, and My SQL and applies appropriate programming languages such as Python, Java.
  • Develops decision support tools, integrates the tool with electronic health record systems and implements them in real world settings.
  • Responsible for the day‑to‑day management of research data of the dental informatics core.
  • Writes technical documentation and conducts training on software implemented/ developed.
  • Performs needs analysis and requirements specification and identifies commercial applications that can meet the school's needs in research.

General Responsibilities

  • Provides experienced analysis of existing data and data structures and satisfies ad‑hoc reporting/analysis requests.
  • Creates reporting specifications for new reports/dashboards/analytical tools and performs testing/validation; ensures integrity, accessibility, and accuracy of reports/dashboards and data structures; reviews and approves user requests for access to reporting data and tools.
  • Consults with faculty and/or staff to identify new business reporting needs and provides guidance and interpretation of complex environments and data.
  • Documents data analysis efforts (data sources, reporting specifications, tools, issue/problem resolutions).
  • Performs experienced analysis to interpret and determine validity and quality of data.
  • Performs migration and conversion of data as needed in support of analysis efforts.
  • Researches and stays up‑to‑date on emerging technologies and tools and makes recommendations for implementation to improve data analysis services and approaches.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in computer science, information science, or related field)

Preferred

  • Master's degree (preferably in computer science, information science, or related field)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years of data analysis, reporting, or related experience

Preferred

  • 2 years of experience working with clinical data

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$58,000 to $69,000 per year based on experience and internal equity
