Responsibilities
Perform highly advanced psychiatric assessment work and report directly to the State Hospital Medical Director.
Conduct psychiatric activities, monitor trends, diagnose, and treat State Hospital patients.
Administer quality and appropriate specialized psychiatric treatments, assessments, and procedures as needed.
Review and analyze system data to ensure recovery plans are individualized and decisions are made in conjunction with the Recovery Team.
Ensure recovery plans are implemented as designed, providing consultation or training as needed to direct care staff.
Attend weekly/monthly meetings, lead or chair discussions to inform and create buy-in to necessary changes and follow through on implementation plans.
Participate in committees of the State Hospital Governing Body and performance improvement activities.
Participate in any other clinically related committee requested by the State Hospital Medical Director or Central Administration.
Plan, assign, and guide the work of others in the multi-disciplinary approach to patient care, supervising depending on hospital structure.
Perform other duties relative to the position, including participation in disaster response or COOP activation as needed.
Duty may include additional pay for work performed on maximum security locations.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
Attend work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, a rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime as per leave policy.
Utilize a multi-disciplinary approach to complete psychiatric assessments, administer treatments and medications, and coordinate with services.
Conduct performance improvement reviews with the Recovery Team as required by TJC, CMS, TAC, and State Hospital policies.
Participate in meetings and committees, performing medication reviews and audits in accordance with policy.
Establish physician–patient relationship through face-to-face contact or telemedicine, especially for newly admitted individuals.
Develop and implement psychiatric recovery plans, documenting interventions and ensuring least-restrictive practices.
Take a leadership role in monitoring system data and trends related to psychiatric care quality, presenting changes to the Recovery Plan.
Maintain open communication with Medical Director, Superintendent, and staff for continuity of services.
Perform mandatory training per HHSC policies, HIPAA, state and federal regulations, and TJC standards.
Lead the area of Psychiatric Services following policy and regulatory requirements.
Manage other staff, providing feedback, performance evaluations, and corrective action as appropriate.

Knowledge of general medicine and psychiatry methods and procedures.
Knowledge of person-centered individualized care and recovery plans development.
Knowledge of psychiatric treatment and ability to collaborate with staff.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications Applicant must have or be able to obtain an unrestricted Texas medical license and be board certified or board eligible (completed residency in Psychiatry) prior to start date.
Initial Screening Criteria
Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) required.
At least three years of experience working as a psychiatrist preferred.
Twelve (12) months experience working with people with psychiatric disorders preferred.
Additional Information Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.
Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime and/or extended hours possible.
