About The Role Protection Science Engineering is an interdisciplinary role that mixes data science, machine learning, investigation and policy/protocol development. As a manager of Protection Scientist Engineers you will lead a small but growing team to design and build systems that proactively identify and enforce abuse on OpenAI’s products. This includes maintaining robust abuse monitoring for new and existing products and prototyping systems that defend against our highest‑risk harms. The team also responds to and investigates critical escalations that are not caught by existing safety systems. You will collaborate cross‑functionally with product, policy, ops and engineering teams.

Location: San Francisco office. The role may involve urgent escalations outside normal work hours and can expose you to sensitive content such as sexual, child safety, violent or disturbing material.

In This Role, You Will

Lead, manage and support an interdisciplinary, technical team across U.S. time zones.

Leverage expertise in designing, launching and improving defense systems to mentor the team and develop technical and organizational solutions.

Identify opportunities to enhance the team’s core work through understanding cross‑functional and technical challenges.

Review and, when appropriate, design and participate in the implementation of abuse detection, review and enforcement for new product launches and major harms.

Partner with Product, Policy, Ops and Investigative teams to understand key risks and with Engineering to secure sufficient data and scaled tooling.

Communicate the team’s work externally, coordinate cross‑functional partners, and scope and prioritize work across abuse response.

You Might Thrive In This Role If You

Have at least two years of experience managing or tech‑leading teams that fight threats at a tech company or government organization.

Have deep experience with technical analysis and harm detection, especially using SQL and Python.

Have experience in trust and safety and/or worked closely with policy, enforcement and engineering teams; an investigative mindset is key.

Have basic data‑engineering experience such as building core tables or writing data pipelines in production, and understand machine‑learning principles and execution. Basic software development skills are a plus.

Have experience scaling and automating processes, especially with language models.

Compensation Range: $320,000 – $425,000
