Position Overview The General Manager leads through Petco’s vision of “Healthier Pets. Happier People. Better World.” to develop a high-performing team that consistently delivers top-line sales growth while maintaining focus on the welfare, health, and proper care of all animals. The GM manages a single Pet Care Center, driving people, performance, and process excellence to achieve overall profitability.

Position Responsibilities People

Build a team that embodies the Petco brand by delivering exceptional service and driving guest loyalty.

Attract, hire, and retain a diverse team of top talent.

Train, coach, and develop leaders and hourly Pet Care Center partners in all areas required to run the store efficiently.

Create a professional environment that inspires and encourages the growth and engagement of partners.

Lead and implement a positive culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.

Ensure quick and courteous service to all guests by helping partners determine customer needs and share product knowledge.

Responsible for all partner performance management in the Pet Care Center.

Demonstrate and support a continuous improvement and growth mindset.

Performance

Meet or exceed goals related to total Pet Care Center sales, profitability, and operational excellence.

Schedule and adjust labor hours & payroll to maximize productivity and achieve sales & payroll goals.

Review and interpret financial and operational reporting, including visits and audit results.

Identify underperforming metrics and develop strategies to improve and grow the business.

Market the Pet Care Center and its products, oversee planning of on‑site and community events.

Process

Ensure the proper health, appearance, welfare, and handling of all animals.

Maintain proper pricing, display, and stocking of merchandise per inventory levels and visual standards.

Submit accounting, inventory, and payroll paperwork in a timely manner; keep expenses within budget.

Maintain the Pet Care Center’s appearance, safety procedures, and professional image.

Secure pets & merchandise, minimizing loss through inventory control and loss prevention.

Open/close the center in accordance with policies and safety procedures.

Other Essential Duties

Model inspiring leadership and selling behaviors.

Promote safety by ensuring policies and procedures are followed.

Foster a collaborative culture that encourages idea sharing and improvements.

Prioritize talent development through training and recruitment.

Represent Petco’s brand and culture with high standards in a fun working environment.

Education And Experience

High school diploma or equivalent (GED) with proficiency in basic business & finance, analysis, and problem-solving.

Excellent communication and computer skills.

Three or more years of management experience, preferably in retail.

Strong organizational and customer service skills.

Professional appearance and genuine interest in animals.

Valid driver’s license; completion of Petco Management Achievement Program modules may be required.

Supervisory Responsibility The General Manager directly supervises a team of leaders and is responsible for all Pet Care Center partners.

Work Environment Duties are conducted indoors with occasional merchandise stocking, customer carry‑outs, and bank deposits. The role may involve bending, kneeling, moving merchandise up to 50 pounds, and standing for long periods. Limited travel may be required.

Contacts This position has continuous contact with the general public, other departments, distribution centers, and support centers. External contacts may include coordination of merchandise returns, vendor meetings, and event planning.

Salary Range Hourly or salary range: $36.00 – $59.50. Pay depends on position, location, experience, and local minimum wage laws.
