Overview The Nursing Professional Development Specialist functions as an educator, change agent, consultant, evidence‑based practitioner, and leader. The Specialist is responsible for assessment, planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of learning and development programs that enhance associates’ performance, promote professional development, or otherwise support the mission, vision, and SPIRIT Values of MedStar Health and the Department of Nursing. This position oversees the Procedural Areas (Interventional Radiology and PACU).
Responsibilities
Demonstrate clinical expertise, leadership, and communication skills; apply education theory and principles to develop learning programs and achieve optimal educational outcomes.
Design, implement, and evaluate designated learning and educational programs and consultative services; assess learning needs through formal and informal approaches.
Apply teaching techniques that promote critical thinking and evidence‑based practice, incorporating adult learning theory.
Plan and conduct orientation of new personnel to facilitate transition to practice and meet competency assessment requirements in conformance with departmental objectives, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards.
Participate in On‑Boarding and Orientation of new associates by conducting general nursing orientation programs and coordinating unit‑based orientation.
Support transition to practice for newly licensed nurses using the MedStar New to Practice Nurse Residency Program model.
Identify learning needs and knowledge or skill gaps requiring remediation; collaborate with unit leaders to promote critical thinking and competent patient care delivery.
Develop education plans, coordinate resources, evaluate responses to teaching, document results, and follow up with associates transitioning to different clinical areas or roles.
Coordinate educational offerings for nursing associates with consideration of regulatory requirements, quality and safety performance improvement, and clinical advancement.
Provide continuing education activities to expand current knowledge and, when appropriate, acquire and maintain certification using provider, unit, and other resources.
Conduct educational activities that inform, teach, and facilitate adoption of new procedures, technologies, equipment, and patient care trends with continuing education credits when appropriate.
Facilitate the offering of clinical nursing specialty certification review programs.
Provide expertise for competency development and competence assessment across the department of nursing; plan and conduct competency validation programs.
Apply principles of adult learning to assess staff learning and competency needs; coach associates and provide feedback to enhance professional nursing practice.
Differentiated practice gaps and performance or system issues and address them accordingly.
Develop evaluation plans and apply evidence‑based evaluation systems to determine effectiveness of educational activities; involve learners in evaluation.
Document participation and level of success during competency and educational programs; disseminate evaluation results and revise learning programs based on data.
Review performance data on clinical quality and safety of care delivery and contribute to plans addressing patient population‑specific needs and enhancing outcomes.
Assist adult learners in applying theoretical knowledge through just‑in‑time training and in‑the‑moment coaching; foster lifelong learning and support career advancement.
Evaluate own practice against professional development standards, guidelines, and regulations; pursue ongoing learning and educational opportunities.
Promote Pathway to Excellence standards through daily practice.
Incorporate evidence into learning programs and clinical education activities; maintain knowledge of trends and innovations; utilize simulation and learning technologies.
Participate in research evidence‑based practice and performance improvement activities; support National Patient Safety Goals and quality metrics.
Participate in committees and collaborate with internal and external partners; serve as liaison with academic partners and clinical student placements; conduct or collaborate on research activities.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required
Master’s degree in Nursing, Health Care, or Business Administration preferred
Experience
3-4 years of progressively more responsible job‑related experience required
Experience in teaching or professional development preferred
Licenses and Certifications
RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia required
Certification in clinical specialty from nationally recognized nursing organization within 1 year required
Nursing Professional Development certification within 36 months of hire required
CPR (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from AHA or American Red Cross within 90 days required
Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit
This position has a hiring range of USD $89,065.00 - USD $162,801.00 per year.
