Overview We are seeking a highly experienced and technically driven Senior Substation Project Engineer to lead and support the engineering and design of medium to high-voltage substations (13kV‑500kV). This is a key technical leadership role, where you’ll take ownership of electrical and physical substation design, oversee project execution, and collaborate closely with clients, vendors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in substation design, project engineering, and engineering team coordination – playing a critical role in delivering safe, innovative, and cost-effective solutions for utility, renewable, and industrial clients.
Responsibilities
Lead the design of substation systems including:
Physical layout plans, sections, and details
One‑line and three‑line diagrams
AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams
Control house layouts and panel arrangements
Grounding and lightning protection systems
Cable routing and conduit plans
Equipment specifications and bill of materials
Conduct and review engineering studies including:
Grounding, short‑circuit, load flow, and voltage drop
Lightning protection analysis
AC/DC station service and battery sizing
Oversee development of technical deliverables: specifications, calculations, reports, construction drawings, and procurement packages
Ensure compliance with client standards and applicable codes (IEEE, NESC, NEC, ANSI, NEMA, IEC)
Project Leadership
Act as Project Engineer Lead, managing design teams and coordination with internal disciplines (Civil, Structural, P&C, physical, communications, settings)
Develop and manage scope of work, schedules, cost estimates, and project milestones
Perform and lead QA/QC reviews on engineering deliverables
Serve as a technical liaison to clients, vendors, and field staff throughout project lifecycle
Field & Construction Support
Support construction with RFI responses, design clarifications, and field troubleshooting
Perform site visits for scoping, construction coordination, and post‑construction inspections
Mentorship & Collaboration
Mentor junior engineers and designers, promoting knowledge transfer and technical growth
Foster strong communication across engineering teams, project managers, and external stakeholders
Education & Years of Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET‑accredited)
8+ years of experience in substation design engineering, with demonstrated leadership on utility‑scale projects
Professional Engineer (PE) license required
To Thrive in This Role, You Will Need
High voltage (15kV‑500kV) substation design
Grounding and lightning protection studies
Physical and/or protection & controls layouts
Substation equipment and vendor coordination
Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or equivalent design software
Strong communication, technical writing, and documentation skills
Ability to lead technical teams and collaborate across disciplines
Experience with relay settings, SCADA integration, and protection philosophies
Familiarity with power system modeling and analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, CYME, SKM)
Knowledge of 3D substation modeling or BIM processes is a plus
Experience supporting substation construction, commissioning, or field troubleshooting
Previous experience working with utilities, EPCs, or regional ISOs
Environmental Factors and/or Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, this position is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10‑50 pounds. Requires good hand‑eye coordination, and arm, hand and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application/form information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
