About the Department General surgeons at University of Chicago Medicine focus on a broad range of diseases including various types of cancer, endocrine disorders, esophageal diseases, bariatric surgical treatment, breast diseases and more. They use minimally invasive techniques (robotic and laparoscopic) and work closely with other specialists to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Faculty and investigators conduct research on infection pathophysiology, genomics and physiology of pancreatic cancer, and other complex basic science questions.
Job Summary The Advanced Practice Provider works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, providing assessment, evaluation, testing, treatment, therapies, medical management and direct care to patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Responsibilities
Places admission orders and manages inpatients.
Assists in the operating room as needed.
Examines patients to obtain information about their physical condition and counsels on therapeutic regimens and health maintenance.
Administers or orders diagnostic tests (x-ray, ECG, laboratory tests) and interprets results.
Develops tentative diagnoses and management plans.
Obtains, compiles, and records patient medical data including health history, progress notes, and exam results.
Performs therapeutic procedures (injections, immunizations, suturing, wound care, infection management).
Prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval.
Evaluates goals and outcomes regarding benefit, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions to achieve patient care goals.
Performs other related work as needed, including cross-covering other General Surgery APPs.
Education Minimum: College or university degree from an accredited institution.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related discipline.
Certifications
Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration.
Eligible for privilege and credentialing through the Medical Staff Office.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s, Doctorate) from an accredited nursing school or completion of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program (ARC-PA).
Current Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license in Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
Physician Assistant license/registration in Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date.
Certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) by start date.
Preferred Competencies
Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership and teaching skills.
Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, written and verbal communication skills.
Strong analytical and independent work ability.
