Ascend as a leader at Houston Methodist Hospital. The Sr Surgical Technologist performs delegated operating room support functions, operates independently, and reports patient observations to licensed nurses or surgeons. The role also mentors Surgical Technologists, trains new hires, and supports patient care and department upkeep.

Teaches others to think critically by explaining decision rationales, providing structured feedback, and serving as the department preceptor for new surgical technologists.
Facilitates teamwork by anticipating the need for assistance and responding positively to requests. Uses peer‑to‑peer accountability to improve department engagement scores.
Service Essential Functions
Prepares the operating room, equipment, and supplies for the next patient and anticipates additional instrumentation needed before the surgeon scrubs in. Maintains up‑to‑date surgeon preference cards.
Assists surgeons and nursing staff by passing instruments, supplies, and performing surgical assistance across a broad range of procedures including orthopedics, gynecology, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, urology, cardiovascular, spine, neurology, oral/maxillofacial surgery, and minimally invasive procedures.
Assists the circulating RN with sponge, instrument, needle, and other surgical counts.
Roles models behaviors and skills through peer‑to‑peer accountability to improve patient satisfaction scores.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during pre‑ and post‑procedures, prepares sterile dressings, and cleans instruments for terminal sterilization following surgery. Assists with terminal room cleaning.
Assists with the implementation and teaching of department‑based safety initiatives and standards of practice. Problem‑solves and manages multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care, initiates corrective actions, and collaborates with the interprofessional team to improve quality and safety targets.
Finance Essential Functions
Maintains efficient use of surgical supplies, delays opening supplies until confirmation of usage, and provides cost‑containment recommendations.
Self‑motivated to manage time effectively, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks while supporting teammates.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Identifies and presents areas for innovation, efficiency, and improvement for department projects and shared governance activities; may co‑chair a unit‑based Shared Governance Council.
Acts as a surgical technology resource on hospital committees; participates in at least one committee or subcommittee and facilitates achievement of committee goals.
Proactively seeks opportunities to enhance knowledge and learning, maintaining an updated My Development Plan (MDP).

Education
High School diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED, homeschool equivalency).
Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or military training equivalency.
Work Experience
Two years as a Surgical Technologist.
Licenses and Certifications – Required
BLS – Basic Life Support
or instructor (AHA).
Certification (CST from NBSTSA, TS‑C from NCCT, or CSA from NCCSA) or grandfather clause eligibility (employed before Sept. 1, 2009). 30 CEUs required every two years.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies for safe job performance via assessments and evaluations.
Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English for patient and safety communications.
Effective communicator with patients, physicians, families, and coworkers using positive language.
Understanding of medical terminology.

Knowledge of instrument sets, individual instruments, supplies, decontamination, and autoclave use.
