George Washington University
Senior Academic Advisor, General & Pre-Health Advising
George Washington University, Washington, District of Columbia, us, 20022
Job Overview
The Senior Academic Advisor for General and Pre-Health Advising plays a vital role in supporting our general academic advising efforts and our pre-health advising initiatives. The George Washington University has many students and alumni interested in pursuing health professions. In collaboration with the Senior Advisor for Pre-Health Advising, this position supports our current students in all undergraduate schools (CCAS, Elliott, SEAS, GWSB, and Milken) and GW alumni for the purposes of exploring whether a health profession program is the best fit for their long-term career goals. In addition, the advisor will assess an applicant's readiness for graduate and/or professional school; how to best prepare for the MCAT; develop strong application materials; and explore short-term and long-term career options. This position will primarily report to an Assistant Director of Advising and will support the Senior Advisor of Pre-Health Advising and the Executive Director of Undergraduate and Pre-Professional Advising in the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences.
In addition to pre-health advising, this position primarily serves as a general academic advisor to assist CCAS undergraduates with navigating transitions, exploring options, overcoming challenges, and developing an academic plan through both individual appointments and group sessions. In this role, the advisor will have knowledge and understanding of GW rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and academic curriculum; track and manage student records; and develop, maintain, and enhance internal projects that further student success and programming.
Responsibilities
Advise GW undergraduate students and alumni in individual and group sessions on the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses regarding preparation for applying to health profession schools.
Assist with programming for pre-health students, such as scheduling and co-presenting workshops.
Aid with strengthening relationships with local health profession schools and other community partners; assist pre-health students with course scheduling for their major (if within CCAS) while incorporating pre-health requirements.
Serve on the Health Professions Advisory Committee.
Maintain detailed advising notes and records of all students from matriculation to graduation as well as alumni who contact the office for advising services; serve as a staff co‑advisor for 3–5 health‑related student organizations registered with the Center for Student Engagement.
Participate in professional development opportunities, including maintaining membership in pre-health advising associations and attending local, regional, and national conferences; stay abreast of relevant changes in the health profession and accreditation.
Perform general Columbian College of Arts and Sciences academic advisor duties and attend events, as necessary (e.g., new student orientation, commencement, and other large-scale events).
Perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications
Hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study.
Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Expertise in advising students and alumni on health profession school preparation, including MCAT, application strategies, and career exploration.
Proven ability to guide students through academic transitions and create effective workshops and programming for pre-health students.
Excellent communication for creating advising materials and managing student records, with strong organizational and collaboration abilities.
Hiring Range $45,925.13 - $63,191.56
