Job Summary and Qualifications The Director of Pharmacy plans, organizes, controls, and supervises activities in the hospital pharmacy, ensuring compliance with hospital policies, state and federal laws, and standards of practice. The role recommends innovations in pharmacy practice, collaborates with administration, and oversees departmental operations.
Responsibilities
Establish quality improvement, fiscal, productivity, and patient satisfaction goals with upper management.
Supervise drug information dissemination through in-service education, consultation with patients, hospital staff, and medical staff.
Assist staff pharmacists in routine duties as needed.
Direct pharmacy personnel activities and provide professional and technical guidance.
Exercise professional judgment in providing therapeutic and drug information to patients and health professionals.
Communicate the hospital’s mission and philosophy to department employees and integrate with departmental operations.
Provide leadership for new program development, implementation, and evaluation, serving as a consultant in areas of expertise.
Anticipate needs and issues of customers/suppliers to ensure effective departmental operations.
Promote teamwork among staff, physicians, and other parties; foster multidisciplinary teamwork to meet organizational goals.
Lead department through effective organization, direction of activities, and appropriate delegation.
Maintain department controls to ensure smooth and effective operations.
Continuously evaluate service quality and product performance for customers.
Collect, document, and report quality assessment and improvement data.
Ensure compliance with JCAHO, DEA, State Board of Pharmacy, hospital policies, and other federal and state regulations.
Implement department-specific policies and procedures.
Establish job performance standards and define responsibilities and qualifications of employees.
Recruit, select, orient, promote, evaluate, retain, and terminate employees.
Determine employee competence and assess educational needs, providing appropriate learning experiences.
Participate actively in hospital committees, task forces, projects, and provide leadership as assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned and adhere to the Code of Conduct, Mission and Value Statement.
Qualifications
B.S. or PharmD from an ACPE‑accredited School of Pharmacy.
Five years of hospital leadership experience or PGY2 leadership residency completion (preferred).
Knowledgeable and proficient in legal responsibilities of pharmacists, state and federal laws governing pharmacy services.
Knowledge of pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria, pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics, and application of new medications and technology.
Current pharmacist license in good standing with the appropriate State Board of Pharmacy.
Current Consultant Pharmacist license in good standing if applicable (FL only).
Controlled Substance license in good standing if applicable.
