A reasonable estimate for Berkeley English Lecturer positions is $68,247 to $74,577; salary is commensurate with teaching experience.
Percent time:
33% to 100%, depending on the number of courses taught. Please note: the use of a lecturer pool does not guarantee that an open position exists.
Anticipated Start August 1, 2025 (Fall 2025), January 1, 2026 (Spring 2026), or Summer 2026 (date depends on which summer session).
Review Timeline Fall teaching – May or early June; Spring teaching – November; Summer – March (if applicable).
Position Duration Fall or Spring: 5 months; Summer: depends on session.

Position Description The Department of English at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of outstanding temporary instructors to teach Reading and Composition courses, lower and upper division courses, and/or sections of lower and upper division courses. We do not anticipate any openings, but we are posting this search in case of an unexpected hiring need.
Responsibilities Teaching one or more sections of a lecture course (or courses) and attending all lectures; advising students and holding regular office hours; assigning grades; preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus); maintaining a course website. Independent courses meet for a total of 3 hours per week; each section of lecture courses meets for a total of 1 hour per week (lecture attendance adds 2 hours).

Qualifications Basic Qualifications (required at time of application) PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in a PhD or equivalent international degree‑granting program at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications (required at time of start) PhD (or equivalent international degree). College‑level teaching experience by time of appointment. For non‑US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (e.g., a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.
Preferred Qualifications PhD (or equivalent international degree) in English Literature or a related field. Demonstrated ability to be a conscientious community member.
