Job Title: Assistant Attorney
Description Performs a variety of assignments in support of prosecutorial legal services, including providing legal research and preparation for major criminal cases. Represents the Commonwealth of Virginia in civil and criminal cases, such as OSHA, traffic, misdemeanor, and some felony cases. Under supervision, prosecutes cases in various courts, conducts research, interviews witnesses, and presents cases at trial. Maintains effective relationships with judicial and law enforcement agencies, keeps accurate files, and documents all actions with sufficient justification.
Requirements
Knowledge of criminal law, procedures, and legal research methodology.
Understanding of the Code of Professional Responsibility for Attorneys.
Skill in preparing legal briefs and memoranda.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with law enforcement, judicial personnel, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited law school.
Active membership in good standing with the Virginia State Bar.
Eligibility to practice law in Virginia and Federal District Courts.
Third-year law students with a practice certificate considered; employment contingent on passing the Virginia Bar.
