Job Summary Reports to the Client Service Manager. Trains new phlebotomists who have been hired in the lab, Physician Office, or other areas to follow proper lab protocol and procedure when drawing blood. Assists in maintaining the training manual and communicates changes in protocol and procedure to all phlebotomists. Assists the Client Service Manager and CP Coordinator in handling daily operational issues and scheduling.
Job Functions Works with Phlebotomy Trainers, CP Coordinator, Client Service Manager, LIS Manager, and other Laboratory Supervisors to ensure successful training of new phlebotomists entering the laboratory services departments.
Develops individual training schedules
Coordinates with experienced phlebotomists to provide training in outpatient areas, on the floors and in the Emergency Department
Coordinates with department supervisors and LIS manager to schedule training in Blood Bank, laboratory computer operations and laboratory rotation
Develops and maintains a training syllabus
Maintains a current checklist of required phlebotomy tasks as mandated by changing procedures and protocol
Ensures all training reports and checklists are filed in the appropriate phlebotomist folders
Monitors training techniques and progress
Meets with phlebotomist trainers/trainees weekly to provide training guidance/assistance
Assures new phlebotomists are competent in all fields by maintaining competency training documentation
Documents re-train or inconsistent performance
Determines readiness of phlebotomists for progressive rotation
Conducts question/answer sessions to troubleshoot or resolve concerns
Communicates progress and performance concerns to the Client Service Manager
Reports on trainer/trainee success with laboratory protocols
Assess all aspects of phlebotomist’s professional conduct
Coordinates training in use of new phlebotomy products
Develops and posts a training schedule for internal laboratory staff
Coordinates training schedule for external sites through the Client Service Manager
Creates sign-off lists to document completed training
Completes other training functions and orientations: coordinates phlebotomy training/rotation for all new laboratory employees within 6 months of hire, including nurses hired as phlebotomy interns; trains phlebotomists to assume a training role; assures trainers are following laboratory protocols and procedures
Maintains a working knowledge of the Laboratory and laboratory issues: stays current in the field of Laboratory Medicine; remains knowledgeable and proficient in the use of computer systems; attends department meetings; reads policy and procedure manuals; reviews lab mail and meeting minutes; attends laboratory in-services and explores continuing education opportunities
Organizes daily phlebotomy operational needs in conjunction with the Client Service Manager and Central Processing Coordinator: organizes workflow, establishes priorities of inpatient, outpatient and ED; coordinates daily phlebotomy assignments; identifies and analyzes service problems and adjusts current staff to remedy the problem; keeps the Client Service Manager informed of daily operational issues; provides input into annual performance reviews of phlebotomy staff; identifies opportunities for improvement relating to the delivery of phlebotomy services and patient care issues and works with the Client Service Manager to implement change
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent required; graduate of a Phlebotomy Training Course preferred
Experience:
Two or more years of phlebotomy experience; previous training or teaching experience preferred
Licensure and/or Certification:
Phlebotomy certification preferred
Skills:
Effective teaching/instruction skills; excellent customer service skills; must be able to read, write, and communicate in English; computer skills required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); ability to maintain confidential information
