Senior Geotechnical Tailings Engineer, North America Minerals & Metals Join AtkinsRéalis in Denver, CO (or Scottsdale, AZ or Reno, NV) as a Senior Geotechnical Tailings Engineer leading multidisciplinary teams in the design and management of tailings impoundments, mine waste facilities, and geoengineering projects.

Overview The North America Minerals & Metals division seeks an experienced geotechnical engineer to act as task lead on projects related to tailings facilities, heap leach pads, and embankment dam construction. The role will involve all phases of design—from concept through construction oversight—working closely with senior engineers and junior staff.

Responsibilities

Act as geotechnical task lead on multidisciplinary project teams for the siting and design of tailings facilities, heap leach pads, and embankment dam projects.

Participate in geotechnical investigations and studies on the potential siting of tailings facilities, heap leach pads, waste rock piles, and deep foundations for mine infrastructure.

Direct the preparation of drawings and technical specifications; willingness to train as a Designer of Record or Engineer of Record for mine waste facilities in compliance with GISTM is a plus.

Participate in technical reviews related to effective containment of mine tailings and mine waste.

Represent the company by presenting at key technical mining conferences.

Participate in training, mentorship, and development of young engineers.

Participate in proposal preparation.

Qualifications

University degree in civil or geological engineering and a geotechnical post‑graduate degree or equivalent experience.

Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Nevada or Arizona, or ability to obtain certification through reciprocity.

Minimum six years of experience designing dikes, embankment dams, and geomembrane‑lined facilities with leak detection.

Demonstrated knowledge of slope‑stability, seepage, stress‑strain software, and dynamic/seismic analysis.

Strong teamwork skills within multidisciplinary engineering teams, including geotechnical engineers, hydrologists, hydrogeologists, and environmental specialists.

Compensation Expected range: $115,000 – $150,000 annually, depending on skills, experience, and geographic location.
