Senior Manager, Senior Counsel - Privacy and Data Protection Capital One Privacy Legal is seeking a talented attorney with a passion for privacy law. Our team sits at a unique, enterprise‑wide position, advising on dynamic and critical data protection issues across all products and services and all lines of business. As part of the TechReg Legal team, we provide legal and risk‑based guidance on issues at the intersection of data, technology, and financial services. We work in furtherance of Capital One’s mission to bring ingenuity, simplicity, and humanity to banking.

What you’ll do:

You will join a collaborative and kind team of subject‑matter experts working on rapidly evolving data protection challenges. You will advise on complex, high‑stakes privacy issues and support business‑critical initiatives as Capital One expands its business and operations globally. You will assess and mitigate legal and regulatory risk, developing a deep understanding of global privacy best practices while working to change banking for good.

Responsibilities

Providing expert legal advice on privacy and data protection issues, ensuring compliance with evolving global regulations and industry best practices.

Assisting business, compliance, risk, and legal partners in identifying privacy issues, summarizing risks, and translating complex legal concepts into practical, customer‑focused solutions.

Supporting partners in building technical and organizational controls, advising on privacy operations and strategy, and participating in cross‑functional working groups and strategic initiatives.

Collaborating with outside counsel, monitoring legal developments and industry trends, developing training and educational materials, and otherwise contributing to the legal privacy team’s knowledge and resources.

Basic Qualifications

Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

Active member in good standing of at least one state bar

At least 4 years of experience at a law firm, in‑house legal department, or government agency

Preferred Qualifications

A background in privacy law, regulatory counseling, and/or advising technology or financial services companies

Demonstrated ability to provide guidance that balances big‑picture strategy with practical, risk‑based compliance solutions to ensure alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements

Demonstrated ability to communicate complex legal issues in simple, actionable terms to a variety of audiences

Strong knowledge of privacy laws, regulations, and principles in the United States and internationally, including comprehensive laws such as GDPR, PIPEDA, DPDPA, and other global privacy laws

Experience providing guidance to legal, business, risk, and compliance partners relating to privacy notices, records of processing activities, transfer risk assessments, data protection impact assessments, and data processing agreements

Salary and Benefits

McLean, VA: $193,000 – $220,300 for Sr. Manager, Sr. Counsel

Richmond, VA: $175,500 – $200,300 for Sr. Manager, Sr. Counsel

Other locations: Pay ranges may vary; actual offer will be reflected in the offer letter.

Eligible for performance‑based incentive compensation, including cash bonuses and/or long‑term incentives.

This role is hybrid; associates spend 3 days per week in‑person at one of Capital One’s beautifully designed offices listed in this posting.
