Base pay range $253,000.00/yr - $319,000.00/yr

As the Mechanical & Controls Systems Engineering Director, you will lead, drive and execute on our strategy to engineer and design large‑scale data center infrastructure. You will implement innovative solutions, collaborate with cross‑functional partners to meet business objectives, and foster relationships with key stakeholders while ensuring high availability and scalability. You will lead and influence technical decision‑making, drive prioritization and execution, and manage outstanding engineers and engineering managers in a fast‑paced, impact‑focused environment. Your responsibilities will include developing and executing our mechanical & controls systems engineering strategy, enabling the deployment of a multi‑billion dollar capital program, building and managing a high‑performing team, and ensuring the delivery of high‑quality products.

Responsibilities

Lead new data center product designs, integrating new technological advancements and requirements while balancing business priorities around cost, efficiency, time to delivery and sustainability.

Responsible for data center product controls systems strategies, design, specifications, programming, simulation and support of new product delivery.

Work closely with Sustainability, CSLA, Electrical, Connectivity, and Manufacturing Engineering teams to achieve holistic new product design that is optimized for cost, construction speed, operational efficiency, and long‑term fungibility/flexibility.

Develop and collaborate with cross‑functional teams to work on prefabricated manufactured solutions (MOFE) and component offerings to be embedded into our new design products.

Balance short‑term priorities while tracking industry standards and emerging trends to drive long‑term strategy. Perform research and develop analysis on new technologies, alternate materials, building models of cost and environmental impact, implement pilots of new approaches, and present recommendations.

Partner with our Site Selection team on assigned site due diligence and master planning projects.

Work with design engineers and field teams on new design types so they can correctly apply them to specific projects.

Lead and oversee change management of applicable systems and drive resolution.

Collaborate with multiple cross‑functional teams outside of Engineering across different disciplines to assess and vet design solutions.

Drive design and path‑to‑breakground program schedules while working closely with design and construction to ensure milestones and completion dates are on track.

Conduct weekly meetings with direct reports to provide feedback and assist in addressing concerns and removing roadblocks.

Help develop and guide career path plans for direct reports.

Align priorities of technical pillar leads and hold responsibility for project prioritization based on an agreed framework.

Manage team goals and track their status as well as updates to them based upon business pivots and emerging needs.

Able to travel up to 25% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent industry experience.

Minimum fifteen (15) years of engineering, design and/or R&D experience for mission‑critical system applications, including concept formulation, detailed design, modeling/simulation, prototyping, verification/validation testing and installation/commissioning prior to commercial operation.

Cross‑disciplinary design, development and operations knowledge of data center or similar mission‑critical industry technical systems including building, electrical, mechanical, controls, building automation and connectivity systems as well as data center server and network system architecture and technologies.

Proven analytical and troubleshooting skills.

Effective communication skills both north to leadership, east‑west to peers and various stakeholders, and south to support engineers.

Previous experience with managing large projects and project teams.

Project Management: Coordinating multiple consultant and contractor teams.

Experience with new builds, retrofits, and operational facilities.

Troubleshooting and analytical skills and experience providing solutions to complex projects under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in Engineering – MS, PhD.

Professional Engineer registration.

Experience in cost estimating methodologies to establish business cases for R&D projects – e.g., Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), ROI, etc.

Working knowledge of design, development, and manufacturing processes as applied to adjacent data center systems and solutions.

Experience in applying systems engineering elements/methods to R&D projects.

Design and operation experience with large and complex data centers, including campus systems.

Working knowledge of relevant domestic and international standards, building codes and safety regulations for cooling systems including NEC, ASHRAE, NETA, ANSI, IEEE, NFPA, UL, UFC and UBC.
