Job Description - Clinical Lab Technologist II - Blood Gas Technician (2504234)
Position Summary: At Stony Brook Medicine Respiratory Care Department, a TH Clinical Laboratory Technologist is a valuable member of our team, providing indirect services and support to the patient population. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior performance and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.
Duties
Perform routine test analysis and adhere to all departmental policies and protocols.
Apply detailed specialized knowledge of scientific principles to perform advanced level testing in general and specific areas regarding blood gas analysis, including identification of atypical results and critical values.
Perform and understand all quality control procedures, reviewing the accuracy of final test reports, recognizing routine laboratory problems, and identifying their causes.
Perform daily routine maintenance on all blood gas analyzers and maintain consumable supplies.
Work with Laboratory Information Technology regarding operating systems maintenance and testing.
Conduct advanced level proficiency testing and report results.
Identify and correct operator errors, ensuring proper documentation in the electronic medical record.
Review the accuracy of final reports, verifying computer print-outs where applicable, and implement new test procedures or equipment under supervisory direction.
Recognize routine laboratory equipment problems, identify causes, and, where applicable, take corrective action or bring issues to the supervisor’s attention.
Communicate effectively with Main Laboratory, Point of Care Department, regulatory agencies, and vendor technicians.
Assist in teaching respiratory therapists, anesthesia staff, and nurses the use of blood gas analyzers, laboratory theory, and technique; helps maintain competencies.
Maintain up‑to‑date overall knowledge of the professional field as required to perform normal duties and keep abreast of all standards and regulations issued by FDA, NYS Department of Health, College of American Pathologists (CAP), and other applicable authorities.
Maintain and conduct safe laboratory practices as required by NYS Department of Health and OSHA.
Understand and utilize all computer systems applicable to the department, including basic maintenance and troubleshooting procedures conducted daily.
Qualifications
SL-1: NYS licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or documented eligibility, including provisional/limited permit eligibility with 0‑2 years demonstrated relevant experience.
SL-2: NYS licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or documented eligibility, including provisional/limited permit eligibility with 3‑5 years demonstrated relevant experience.
SL-3: NYS licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or documented eligibility, including provisional/limited permit eligibility with a minimum of 6 years demonstrated relevant experience.
Preferred
MT / MLS (ASCP) Certification or equivalent.
Additional chemistry or blood gas analysis experience.
Working knowledge of blood gas analyzers.
Experience using and maintaining hospital information and operating systems.
Experience with various computer programs (Excel, EP Evaluator, etc.).
