IS Senior Systems Programmer - IT Research and Innovation Pay Competitive Location Columbus/Ohio Employment type Other Job Description Req#: 44537 Overview The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital is looking for a motivated and collaborative Sr. Systems Programmer who is eager to get engaged in developing and supporting data solutions for data-driven research discovery, quality improvement, and operational excellence. The Sr. Systems Programmer will be a member of the Data Collaboration Team within the IT Research & Innovation Division. They will play an important role in enabling research data capture, clinical data query & extraction, multisite clinical research data network, data analytics, and more. They will be involved in every step of the clinical research data processing pipeline from data ingestion, extraction, indexing/searching (both discrete and non-discrete like text/imaging), data management, data security, all the way to destruction. They are expected to be or quickly learn to be familiar with state of art research data modeling, data standards, record linkage, and data interoperability: including structured, text, unstructured data, streaming data, wearable data etc. They are expected to be excellent data stewards with good understanding of data privacy, confidentiality, security, and ethics. They will be exposed to and learn about the local, regional, and national data practices, policies, trends, and roadmaps. They are a strong research and data literacy advocate to promote best practices of data entry, collection, and governance at NCH that facilitate research activities and maximize the research values of data. The Sr. Systems Programmer will be able to weigh research needs against technical best practices and will determine the solution that provides the best combination of functionality, performance, and ease of maintenance. The Sr. Systems Programmer will engage in design discussions with the Data Architect, and demonstrate the ability to see any applications or queries from the user's point of view and create code in line with best practices. They must possess excellent verbal communication skills and ability to interact with users at all levels within the organization. This is a full time, benefits eligible position. Responsibilities PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Development of code and systems to meet organizational needs in a variety of platforms including but not limited to Oracle, SQL Server, Click Commerce, Windows scripting, and Linux Scripting. Provides exemplary customer service to define business needs and translate those needs into solutions. Provides feedback to Data Architect regarding refining structures needed to meet business requirements. Identify and quantify data issues within the organization and assist in the development plans to resolve data issues. Coordinates activities with architect(s) and management. Perform analysis of all data into, out of and within NCH in support of Data Warehousing efforts. Supports the maintenance of the Analytic Systems data dictionaries. Develop, document and perform testing and validation as needed. Works with both Clinical and Research data while keeping PHI exposure to a need-only basis. Support regular data management processes and ad hoc user requests. Define development project plans, including scoping, scheduling, providing time estimates for programming tasks and implementation plans and schedules. Develop technical documentation to define the system components, development environment and implementation planning/strategies. Responsible for developing accurate time estimates on related project work. Document and share knowledge with larger development team. Assists with tickets to support user requests within the environment. Serves as technical lead, as assigned. Serves as technical lead, as assigned. Qualifications KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED 5+ years' experience in development life cycle. 3+ years of recent and relevant experience within an Oracle/SQL Server environment including scripting in SQL. 3+ years' experience in health care environment. Experience working with Data warehouse, OLTP, and OLAP environments. Proven ability to develop, test, and deploy ETL and data integration processes according to requirements. Experience in SQL and performance tuning. Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree (and 5 years equivalent work experience or specialized training) in Information Technology (IT), Computer Science (CS), Software Engineering, or a related discipline. Development experience in shell scripting in Windows and Linux. Development experience using XML/XSL, JSON, and related standards. Java development preferred but not required. Working with Health Care data model highly preferred e.g. PCORI, OMOP. Experience with Datavant or similar vendor solution for record linkage is a plus. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills required to interact effectively with all levels of the organization and external contacts. Ability to balance multiple short-term deliverables while building long term solutions. Ability to work flexible schedules to meet job requirements; requires occasional after-hours support Establishes schedules and priorities for system programming, standards definition, and other support activities. Reviews and approves results of software tests prior to implementation. Mentor junior staff. Performs other duties as assigned. The workload will be heavy but manageable most of the time.
