About The Job Sports Medicine Physician (Head Team Physician) – Primary Care and Student Health – Washington, DC

Georgetown University is the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit University with nearly 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The Student Health Center is a Department of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital serving the students of Georgetown University. Our physicians provide high‑quality urgent and primary care to our students in support of the core mission of cura personalis—caring for the whole person. Georgetown University Athletics is an NCAA Division 1 athletics program with over 700 athletes and 26 varsity sports.

This position is an embedded primary‑care physician dedicated to the health and wellness of student athletes. It is a full‑time position with a 50/50 split between primary care in athletics and sports medicine for the general student population at the Student Health Center.

The incumbent will be a MedStar employee and credentialed as clinical staff at the MedStar Georgetown Student Health Center. The physician can also moonlight in MedStar Urgent Cares as desired for extra compensation. The position reports to the Medical Director of the MedStar Georgetown Student Health Center.

Job Responsibilities

Serve as the Head Team Physician and role model for professionalism and evidence‑based medicine.

Serve as Head Team Physician for conferences or NCAA tournaments hosted by Georgetown Athletics, overseeing coverage and emergency action plans.

Determine clearance status for all athletes participating in Georgetown athletics.

Advocate for the health and wellbeing of student athletes.

Collaborate with Athletic Trainers, Strength & Conditioning staff, Nutritionist and Director of Sports Psychology.

Conduct primary care clinic and manage or refer student athletes for all health care needs.

Participate in training for sports medicine staff on emergency action plans and evidence‑based guidelines.

Help review and revise health protocols and procedures for the athletics department.

Qualifications

Board‑certified/board‑eligible in Primary Care Sports Medicine trained Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine.

Experience working in college medicine preferred.

Excellent clinical skills and interest in healthcare and development of college‑aged population.

Preference for a candidate with at least 2 years post‑fellowship experience in Sports Medicine.
