Job Description The Medical Laboratory Scientist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory/accreditation standards. The role performs test procedures in a clinical laboratory and conveys results to the physician or designee accurately and timely for patient diagnosis and treatment.
Responsibilities
Technical responsibilities:
Performs all aspects of pre‑analytic workflow appropriate for the specific laboratory section to ensure orders are entered correctly, specimens collected are appropriate for the test ordered, and are correctly processed/transported.
Verifies order where necessary and non‑patient information such as collection time according to established protocol.
Handles unresolved orders and troubleshoots where needed.
Verifies with physicians and/or nurses prior to laboratory information system (LIS) order entry to resolve unclear, duplicate or otherwise ambiguous orders.
Verifies specimens for add‑on tests are available and acceptable and generates add‑on test orders.
Recognizes when fraud and abuse compliance issues require adjustments to the test order.
Collecting, receiving and processing of specimens: verifies specimens are correctly labeled upon receipt, evaluates them for appropriateness, documents unacceptable specimens and notifies as needed, prioritizes specimen processing, aliquots specimens per protocol, and performs all analytical testing per SOP.
Maintains test system integrity: performs preventive maintenance, verifies reagents and supplies meet acceptability criteria, ensures sufficient inventory, performs QC, and evaluates QC results.
Performs specimen preparation as required, transfers or ships specimens to approved testing locations, and prioritizes testing based on assignment or established TAT.
Conducts technical review and interpretation, evaluates test results, provides accurate interpretations, follows critical value notification protocols, troubleshoots problems, and manages pending logs.
Post‑test specimen storage: stores specimens per protocols, retrieves when needed, and ensures accurate post‑analytical workflow.
Verifies and reports results, generates reports, reviews reports, amends erroneous reports, and responds to inquiries per confidentiality protocols.
Stores documents and records, captures charges with billing, and escalates billing problems when necessary.
Universal responsibilities: follows SOPs, operates instruments, uses computers per protocol, performs quality system duties, meets proficiency standards, trains new employees, reviews SOPs, participates in new test development, attends personal development sessions, ensures safety, maintains a clean workspace, provides excellent service, protects PHI, and assists patients and visitors as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology, or Allied Health qualifying the applicant to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or equivalent certification examination.
License/Certification and Regulatory Agency: General MLS or MT (ASCP) certification or eligible, or categorical BB, C, H or M (ASCP) certification or eligible.
If hired after 1/19/2025 must be ASCP certified (or equivalent) within one year of employment.
