An elite specialty insurance services provider is looking for a seasoned Chief Underwriting Officer to lead all underwriting functions for self-insured workers’ compensation programs. This individual will guide team performance, set underwriting strategy, and ensure disciplined, data-informed decision-making. This role is on-site four days per week in Minneapolis, MN and plays a pivotal part in organizational leadership.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead and mentor the underwriting team, fostering technical excellence and professional growth.
Collaborate with senior leadership to shape business strategy and long-term objectives.
Evaluate and price self-insured workers’ compensation risks, ensuring regulatory compliance and internal standards.
Develop and enforce underwriting policies, procedures, and quality controls.
Build and maintain relationships with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders to support business development and retention.
Use analytics to track trends, measure performance, and refine underwriting strategies.
Oversee underwriting for pools, alternative risk programs, guaranteed-cost plans, and multi-line placements.
Manage reinsurance structuring, negotiations, and ongoing partner relationships.
Provide leadership with reports on portfolio performance, market trends, and risk exposure.
Drive process improvements and implement technology to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Directly handle complex or high-risk accounts when necessary.

Qualifications
10+ years of underwriting experience in workers’ compensation.
5+ years managing teams or leading underwriting operations.
Strong expertise in self-insured programs, pool administration, and regulatory compliance.
Excellent analytical capabilities and sound judgment in risk evaluation.
Proven leadership skills with a history of developing and guiding successful underwriting teams.
Strong proficiency with underwriting systems, reporting tools, and data analytics.
Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Business, Finance, or a closely related field.
CPCU or ARM designations strongly preferred
