Job Overview We are seeking an attorney to serve as Chief Mediator in the newly created Settlements and Mediation Section of the Federal Civil Rights Litigation Division. The division defends sworn and civilian police personnel and the City of Chicago in federal and state lawsuits concerning alleged civil rights violations or state law liability claims. The Settlements and Mediation Section focuses exclusively on strategic resolution of cases involving tort, mass‑tort, and federal civil‑rights litigation.

Responsibilities

Make preliminary assessments of new matters, review, analyze, and evaluate existing litigation matters.

Participate in mediation and recommend settlement strategies to Department of Law senior staff and leadership.

Generate data on program metrics and costs; develop policies and procedures to operate the program efficiently.

Manage, direct, and administer the Settlements and Mediation Section’s mediation program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Eight (8) years of legal experience as a licensed attorney.

Three (3) years of experience in settlement negotiation, mediation, or dispute‑resolution program management, preferably involving multi‑million‑dollar exposure.

Federal civil litigation experience.

Superior knowledge of civil law principles and practices.

Exceptional communication, writing, research, and editing skills.

Proficient with typical litigation technology (Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat).

Ability to organize, prioritize, monitor, and control workflow deadlines.

Exceptional supervisory and leadership skills.

Commitment to public service.

Qualifications

Graduation from an American Bar Association accredited law school with a Juris Doctor.

Admission to the Illinois Bar (or eligible for admission under Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705).

Compensation Salary $118,596 – $164,100 (based on experience and credentials).
