Executive Director, Religious & Spiritual Life (Center for Diversity and Inclusion) The Johns Hopkins University seeks an Executive Director of Religious & Spiritual Life who will lead the vision, development, and execution of extracurricular and co‑curricular programs focused on religion and spirituality. The Director oversees a team of religion and spiritual life content experts and Chaplains, serving as a strategic leader, advisor, and advocate for fostering student belonging and thriving at JHU.

Responsibilities

Provide strategic leadership for university‑wide Religious and Spiritual Life initiatives.

Serve as strategic and operational advisor to Student Affairs leadership on religious and spiritual programming and support needs.

Collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to develop and facilitate educational and co‑curricular experiences that promote pluralism, spiritual well‑being, and holistic growth.

Develop, implement, and maintain a student engagement and belonging plan for RSL.

Ensure RSL fosters advisement and leadership development for student religious communities.

Partner with key offices (Admissions, Student Transitions, Center for Student Success, Integrated Learning & Life Design, Center for Social Concern, Leadership Engagement, Experiential Learning, Student Health & Well‑Being, academic programs) to support recruitment, retention, and belonging.

Work with faculty and staff across the university and with community partners to increase educational opportunities and awareness of diverse religious practices.

Maintain collaboration frameworks with interfaith and interreligious partners, promoting dialogue and engagement.

Ensure programs align with Student Affairs goals and assess learning outcomes.

Develop and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with stakeholders both on‑campus and in the Baltimore community.

Represent Student Affairs on university committees and lead a university‑community Interfaith Council.

Hire, train, evaluate, and supervise department personnel; set goals, provide professional development, and foster a positive inclusive culture.

Manage unit budget and resources, ensuring fiscal integrity in collaboration with financial analysts.

Lead all‑staff meetings and support center‑wide operations (office space, technology, onboarding).

Advise on invitations, speaking engagements, and professional commitments; coordinate updates to donors and alumni relations.

Leverage writing skills for reports, presentations, and other materials; maintain discretion and confidentiality.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience cultivating inter‑religious collaboration and understanding of religious and spiritual life in higher education.

Depth in religious pluralism, student programming, and evaluation.

Commitment to pluralism and belonging.

Data‑driven assessment of initiative effectiveness and learning outcomes.

Strong written and verbal communication; decision‑making and critical thinking.

Strategic partnership building and high‑profile crisis management.

Managing large, complex initiatives and multiple priorities.

Ability to navigate institutional dynamics, conflicts, and cross‑department collaboration.

Excellent organization, time management, adaptability, empathy.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in religious leadership or equivalent training.

Seven to ten years of progressive experience in a related field, preferably higher education.

Additional education may substitute for required experience under JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

Ordination by a formal religious body.

Strong knowledge of inclusive, ethical practice.

Extensive supervision experience with professional development and feedback.

Proven success working with diverse students and student organizations.

Employment Information

Title: Executive Director, Religious & Spiritual Life

Location: Homewood Campus

Salary: $98,200 – $171,900 annually (commensurate with experience)

Schedule: M‑F 8:30‑5:00; after‑hours and weekend evenings as needed during academic year

FLSA Status: Exempt; Employment type: Full‑time; Level: L/04/LF
