Job Summary The dermatology medical billing coder works under direct supervision, acquires skills and knowledge in revenue cycle practices and concepts, and learns to work on projects of limited scope and complexity. The coder will perform coding of all E/M and procedural codes for outpatient services for 45+ attending physicians at UCSF Health Dermatology Department, ensuring that teaching physician guidelines are correct, including all minor and major procedure coding.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range is dependent on experience and internal equity. For union‐represented positions, placement will follow the collective bargaining agreement. The current hourly rate range for this position is $26.11–$55.32, with an entry point at $31.64, d.o.e., and is subject to change based on union requirements. For more information on benefits, visit

Department Description The dermatology practices at UCSF Medical Center are regional centers offering a broad spectrum of diagnostic and treatment services for patients of all ages with cutaneous problems. We provide the most comprehensive skin cancer treatment program in Northern California, are the region’s only vascular anomalies center, and offer a complete psoriasis treatment program. Services include acne, autoimmune and connective tissue disease, HIV‑related skin disorders, environmental dermatitis, rosacea, hair and nail disorders, wound and ulcer care, and human papillomavirus. Procedures performed include biopsies, incisions, Mohs surgery, and cosmetic procedures.

Responsibilities Coding all E/M and procedural coding for outpatient services, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines, and maintaining accurate documentation review and audit processes.

Required Qualifications

Associate’s degree or at least two years of relevant experience.

Minimum of six months of relevant experience.

Basic understanding of CPT‑4, ICD‑10, and HCPCS coding guidelines and policies.

Experience in medical documentation review or audit.

Detail‑oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time efficiently, prioritize tasks, and complete assignments on schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience/training.

Knowledge of billing, collections, charge capture, contractual adjustments, third‑party reimbursements, and cash management.

Experience with reporting instruments, metrics, and/or dashboard design.

Proficiency in database, spreadsheet, and presentation software.

Basic communication skills, with the ability to interpret and present clinical financial information clearly and concisely.

Analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to evaluate workflows and systems.

Interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team environment with internal staff across business and clinical areas.

One or more years of dermatologic specialty professional coding and/or billing experience, or two years of relevant surgical office professional coding and/or billing experience.

License/Certification
