The Windows Senior Systems Administrator designs, builds, and maintains on-premises and cloud IT infrastructure in cooperation with scientists and administrative staff and assists with the planning and managing of department projects to meet the computing needs of various users. Provides solutions to a wide variety of complex problems of diverse scope.
Administers, maintains, patches, and troubleshoots Microsoft-supported versions of Windows Servers, Microsoft SQL Servers, Active Directory, Domain Controllers, Group Policy, and Print servers
Installs, maintains, and supports computer software, hardware, and virtual environments such as VMware or Hyper-V.
Manages and patches Windows applications and systems using WSUS and SolarWinds Patch Manager or similar including creating and deploying patches and updates for non-Microsoft products and those unavailable via WSUS
Monitors new releases and security bulletins of software and operating systems and reading corresponding release notes (e.g. Microsoft’s Security Update Guide, Adobe’s Security Bulletins and Advisories, Oracle’s Critical Patch Updates, etc.)
Manages and maintains Microsoft licensing programs, ensures license compliance, and tracks licenses used
Tracks supported versions and end-of-life policies of Windows-based software, operating systems, and hardware, including Microsoft’s Lifecycle Policy
Ensures every Windows Server and service is backed up and knows the disaster recovery options
Develops and documents system access, monitoring, and control procedures to reduce cybersecurity risks
Researches, evaluates and recommends software and systems
Prevents, detects and investigates suspicious activity in a timely manner
Writes and debugs scripts for systems automation
Plans and manages various projects within the department
Cultivates and maintains effective relationships with users, management and other departments
Provides training and mentoring to IT Staff
Works outside of normal business hours when needed
Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Skills & Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent (e.g. GED)
Five (5) or more years of relevant experience in Windows Server administration
Working knowledge and experience sufficient to successfully support, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot Microsoft’s DNS, DHCP, IIS, LDAP, AD CA, BitLocker, Network Policy Server for RADIUS authentication, Windows Admin Center, Windows LAPS, and Azure Active Directory
Understanding and ability to implement and maintain email authentication, including SPF, DKIM, and DMARC
Working knowledge and experience with cybersecurity and vulnerability management
Outstanding IT troubleshooting skills and experience with an ability to implement outside-of-the-box solutions, including self-created, free or open-source, or low cost
Three (3) or more years of managing patching of applications and Windows Servers, workstations, and laptops
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse population and range of personalities
Strong client service orientation
A high degree of professional integrity
Adaptable to changing work requirements
Competence in project management
Demonstrated ability to independently plan and manage time and priorities
Knowledgeable in computer security, systems design, and industry best practices
All ISB staff members are expected to have baseline technical skills and the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately over email, the intranet/forum, etc. Employees should be able to use Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint at a functional level.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in computer science or IT-related discipline
Prior work experience in a non-profit or scientific research organization
Relevant industry technical certifications
Experience in training and/or mentorship of other IT professionals
Physical Demands:
Position is in a typical office environment with no adverse environmental conditions expected. Regularly requires sitting for extended periods. Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Frequently required to communicate with others using voice and hearing to exchange information. Regularly requires repeating motions that may include hands, wrist, or fingers (e.g. using a computer keyboard and mouse). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. Potential exposure to vibration and minor risk of electrical shock while performing duties.
