Summary Under the close supervision of a professional nurse and/or physician, perform a variety of duties in the operating room to assist the surgical team, such as scrubbing on all types of surgical procedures, lifting and positioning patients, cleaning instruments, restocking supplies, etc. Brown University Health employees are expected to successfully role‑model the organization’s values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence, as these values guide our everyday actions with patients, customers and one another. Responsibilities
Assist in preparing operating rooms for surgical procedures, ensuring all necessary instruments, equipment and supplies are available and properly stored.
Assist nursing personnel and orderlies in lifting and positioning patients for surgical procedures.
Scrub on all types of surgical procedures, pass instruments, sutures and sponges; assist in holding retractors and suctioning, and anticipate needs of the physician.
Maintain strict aseptic techniques and report any breaks.
Clean surgical instruments and equipment after procedures using autoclaves and ultrasonic sterilization, wrap and store them.
Remove soiled linen and supplies and assist in general cleaning of the operating room.
Obtain clean linen and supplies and set up room for the next procedure.
Obtain special equipment and supplies from storage areas and remove unused supplies from the surgery cart.
Stock surgical supplies in operating rooms and storage areas and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Basic knowledge of various surgical procedures and aseptic techniques.
Knowledge of surgical equipment and ability to operate sterilization equipment.
Demonstrated ability to provide patient care throughout lifespan with consideration of aging, development, and cultural patterns.
High School Diploma or GED required.
Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program or associate degree, or current certification as a CST or NCCT‑TC (for military experience).
Three years of experience as a surgical technologist within the past five years.
Successful completion of Brown University Health on‑job surgical technologist training program.
BLS certification required upon hire.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements Required to work in a sterile environment and be exposed to cuts, punctures, burns, anesthesia gases, odors and communicable diseases. Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning patients and to stand for extended periods during procedures.
Pay Range $29.18 – $47.60 per hour

Schedule: Monday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Sunday–Saturday call, 10‑hour days, with call/weekends/rotations/holiday requirements.
