Position Summary The Vice President of Payroll and Total Rewards is a key strategic leader within the Human Resources function and is responsible for the design, governance, and delivery of the Company’s payroll, compensation, and benefits programs. This role ensures compliance, operational excellence, and alignment of total rewards strategies with business goals to attract, retain, and motivate top talent across the organization. Key Responsibilities Payroll Leadership
Partner with the Payroll Manager to oversee multi-state payroll for all Marsden companies, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with federal, state, and union regulations
Establish and monitor payroll controls and internal processes
Provide escalated support to payroll staff, serving as a liaison with vendors, HR, and corporate functions
Complete quarterly and annual tax filings and ensure alignment with payroll results
Drive standardization and efficiency across payroll systems and processes, leveraging technology to improve employee experience.
Ensure compliance with union contracts, wage attachments, garnishments, and other legal requirements
Maintain departmental continuity and cross-training for team back-up coverage
Benefits Administration
Partner with the Benefits Manager to enhance processes, troubleshoot issues, and ensure effective benefits administration
Support alignment of benefits design and strategy with the CHRO and broader HR leadership
Oversee accurate and timely benefits enrollment, compliance, and reporting
Compensation and Total Rewards
Provide insights and data to support pay structure design, market benchmarking, and incentive planning
Ensure equity and consistency in pay practices across multiple business units and geographies
Evaluate total rewards programs for competitiveness, cost-effectiveness, and employee engagement impact
Partner with HR to support communication and education efforts to ensure employees understand and value their total rewards
Drive process optimization and consistency across payroll, benefits, and compensation functions
Lead systems and process integration projects related to acquisitions and conversions
Identify opportunities to leverage technology for greater efficiency and accuracy
Team Performance
Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing payroll and benefits team
Set clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and promote a culture of accountability and professional growth
Acquisition Integrations
Partner with HR, Finance, and integration leads to align pay and benefits systems for newly acquired entities
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Accounting, Finance or similar discipline
10+ years of progressive leadership experience in payroll, compensation, and benefits, including 5+ years in a senior leadership role
Strong technical knowledge of payroll systems and compliance requirements (FLSA, ERISA, ACA, COBRA, etc.)
Demonstrated success in leading large‑scale payroll operations and total rewards strategy in a multi‑state or multi‑entity organization
Proven ability to lead process improvement initiatives and manage complex projects
High proficiency in Excel and HRIS systems
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
Excellent communication, analytical, and leadership skills, with the ability to build trust and influence across the organization
Experience in service‑based or decentralized environments highly preferred
Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred but not required
