The Core Tax Services (“CTS”) Experienced Manager – ASC740 is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex corporate tax and ASC 740 tax issues. In this role, the Core Tax Services Experienced Manager is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues and recognizing and communicating potential risks and potential changes in the tax policy.
Job Summary Responsibilities include providing expert advice on ASC 740 tax compliance and consulting, managing client relationships, supervising staff, and ensuring quality and compliance with firm policies.
Job Duties
Tax Compliance
Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens and ensures firm teams comply with firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”).
Conducts top‑level review of tax return and resolves all tax issues; involves specialists where appropriate.
Communicates with client and assurance about issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
Plans and reviews the tax process and the procedures to include budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement process and time versus budget, timely billing, and collection of A/R.
Manages client relationships and expectations in accordance with the project.
Provides timely advice to clients.
Research
Identifies when research is needed; frames issues concisely and reports analysis.
Provides research methodology, trains managers/staff, and involves firm specialists as appropriate.
ASC 740 (fka FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Applies firm policies and the BDO TQM regarding ASC 740 proactively.
Explains and discusses components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to clients.
Communicates with assurance for timely planning of tax accrual reviews.
Reviews tax provisions and prepared workpapers; utilizes and manages Specialized Tax Services (STS) as needed.
Tax Consulting
Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes.
Considers applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties, develops and implements a work plan, serves as a technical resource, ensures compliance with firm policy, provides exam support, and frames projects for delegation.
Tax Specialization
Develops in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in multiple areas of taxation (individual, corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits & incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits).
Might organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions and mentor team members.
Strategy Development
Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, firm, or personnel positions.
Consistently suggests improvements, may lead marketing campaigns, presents complex strategies to clients, and collaborates with national tax and specialized tax services.
Other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.
Trains associates and seniors on software tools.
Acts as a career advisor.
Schedules and manages workload of associates and seniors.
Provides verbal and written performance feedback.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, required.
Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, required.
Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred.
Experience
Six (6) or more years of prior experience, required.
Experience managing the process of preparing and auditing ASC 740 computations for both privately held and publicly traded clients, required.
Prior supervisory experience, required.
Multinational client experience, preferred.
License/Certifications
CPA, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (or equivalent), required.
Software
Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat, preferred.
Experience with tax research databases such as BNA and RIA; proficient in tax compliance process software including GoFileRoom, GoSystemRS, Caseware, BNA Depreciation Software, or comparable programs, preferred.
