Pay Range U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provided pay range: $250,000.00/yr - $320,000.00/yr
Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Board Certification in Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine by the appropriate accrediting agencies.
Current BLS and ACLS certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Physical activity: sitting, standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending.
Incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable and capable to perform the duties of the position.

Duties
The Psychiatrist will provide psychiatric care in the outpatient Mental Health Clinic for the VA Maine Healthcare System (VAMHS).
Provide care at the Togus campus and at Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) located in Bangor, Portland, Rumford, Calais, Lincoln, Lewiston‑Auburn, and Presque Isle.
Diagnose, treat, and manage patients with mental illness according to standard methods and techniques.
Perform initial clinical diagnostic examinations and formulate initial treatment plans.
Maintain a panel of patients, seeing unscheduled patients as presented to the clinic.
Provide medication management services.
Provide psychotherapy services for clinicians trained, certified, and credentialed in VA evidence‑based therapy practices.
Coordinate medical care for clinic patients requiring primary care follow‑up or specialty medical/surgical consultation.
Facilitate admissions to inpatient mental health unit.
Coordinate care with inpatient psychiatric or medical‑surgical physicians.
Provide clinical support, guidance, and oversight for the MH services of the CBOC MH staff and liaison to Primary Care as needed.
Represent the MHSL on Medical Center projects and initiatives as directed by MHSL management.
Perform Compensation & Pension exams/reviews with proper orientation and training.
Support specialty care clinics (e.g., Clozaril‑Suboxone), evaluate and manage medication in the substance abuse treatment program, serve in the PTSD program, and participate in research projects.
Work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team with nurses, social workers, clerks, mid‑level providers, and other physicians.
Demonstrate effective communication skills in collaborative work.
Document care in the electronic medical record promptly and completely.
Provide tele‑mental health services as needed.
Offer on‑call coverage to the Togus Psychiatry inpatient unit as needed, in accordance with VAMHS rules.
Serve on medical staff committees or represent Psychiatry as directed by management.
Teach trainees and/or participate in MHS research projects as directed.
