Vice Chancellor for Budget & Finance/Chief Operating Officer Location: UNC Asheville, Blue Ridge Mountains, Western North Carolina – a public liberal arts campus in the University of North Carolina system.

Position Summary Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor serves on the senior leadership team and leads Finance, Campus Operations, Human Resources, and Master Planning. Responsibilities include strategic direction of fiscal, business, and operational affairs, budget development, long‑term financial planning, and ensuring institutional efficiency. The role requires a leader with integrity, strategic vision, and experience managing complex budgets.

Position Type & Compensation Full‑time (12 months). Exempt. Salary commensurate with experience (anticipated range $225,000–$240,000) plus up to 50% bonus potential.

Work Schedule Office hours Monday‑Friday 8 am‑5 pm, with night/weekend work and travel as needed.

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Master’s degree in a related field, or Bachelor’s with significant equivalent experience.

5–7 years of senior‑level budget and finance experience, preferably in higher education.

Demonstrated leadership skills in complex environments.

Entrepreneurial mindset.

Data‑driven decision making for fiscal and operational priorities.

Preferred Education, Experience & Skills

Master’s degree in business, accounting, finance, public administration, or equivalent.

Career history showing progressive responsibility for financial and business operations in higher education or similarly complex organization.

CPA license or other relevant certification.

Visionary, strategic, inclusive leader with strong integrity and communication skills.

Experience in facilities planning and construction projects.

Understanding or management of IT operations.

Innovation that leads to cost savings, revenue generation, or service enhancements.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Maintain confidentiality, employ problem‑solving and conflict resolution, exercise independent judgment.

Deep understanding of and commitment to the public liberal arts mission.

Management and analytical skills relevant to budget, finance, master planning, facilities, IT, sustainability, and grants.

Manage complex budgets integrated with strategic planning.

Collaborate with leaders in planning and budgeting.

Effectively interact with external constituencies (media, boards, government).

Create partnerships to implement goals.

Operate in a consensus‑driven environment.

Safeguard fiscal, human, technological, and physical assets with strong controls.

Effective communication and supervisory skills.
