Heavy Equipment Operator IV - Road and Bridge

Job Description
General Summary:
Operates and maintains equipment used for road construction and maintenance; and assists in the construction and repair of county roads, culverts, ditches, and bridges.
Essential Duties:
Operates various types of equipment for county road maintenance and construction projects, including 18‑wheeler, asphalt distributor, backhoe, rubber tire loader, steel roller, rubber roller, tractor and shredder, bulldozer, dump truck and water truck. Maintains equipment, checking oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic system, and making appropriate adjustments; patches, tampes, packs, and levels hot mix, dirt, or other materials during road repair; smooths road surfaces; clears ditches and culverts; installs and repairs culverts; performs work with hand tools, including digging trenches, cutting down trees and brush, and removing driftwood and debris from culverts; loads heavy equipment, standard hand tools, and road maintenance materials onto haul truck; drives trucks to haul materials to and from work sites; surveys roads for potential hazards; may dispose of animal carcasses; may direct traffic at work sites as needed; secures appropriate hazardous warning signs.

Education
Required: High school graduation or its equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Required: Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker and Hazardous Materials endorsements (valid). Preferred: none specified.

Typical: Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Must frequently bend, stoop, squat, and walk. Frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds, such as tools and equipment.

Typical: Knowledge of methods, practices, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance of roadways; safe operation of the equipment used and of the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to operation of heavy and light motorized equipment. Operate equipment used in road construction and maintenance; service and make minor repairs on equipment; apply safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow instructions; tolerate outside working conditions; work effectively and cooperatively with co‑workers; maintain Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities.
Work Environment
Typical: The noise level is frequently loud. The employee is constantly required to work closely with others as part of a team, is frequently exposed to danger, and occasionally required to perform tedious, exacting work, switch from one task to another, and work under time pressures to meet deadlines.
