Psychiatric Emergency Services Manager

Claratel BH is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). The DeKalb Regional Crisis Center provides crisis intervention and stabilization services for adults. The Center offers three levels of care starting with the Crisis Services Center unit that receives walk-ins, transfers from emergency rooms, and involuntary referrals for evaluation. If further observation is needed, individuals are monitored in the Temporary Observation Unit for 12-24 hours. Individuals needing a longer period of stabilization or substance withdrawal management (usually 5-7 days) are admitted to the Crisis Stabilization Unit where ongoing care includes crisis counseling, medication, and assistance with discharge planning. Position Summary: The Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) Manager is responsible for the overall clinical and operational oversight of care delivery within the PES program. This includes supervision of all core services such as triage, nursing care, behavioral health assessments, psychiatric evaluations, medication management, care coordination, interdisciplinary collaboration, and discharge and transition planning. The role emphasizes timely coordination, a team-based approach, and the provision of comprehensive, person-centered care. The PES Manager works closely with prescribers, APRNs, RNs, and clinical staff to ensure care is evidence-based and responsive to individuals experiencing psychiatric crises. Additionally, the Manager leads program development efforts, evaluates workflow efficiency, tracks key performance metrics, and supports staff in achieving strategic goals to maintain optimal program functioning. This position directly supervises Shift Supervisors and collaborates with leadership to drive improvements aligned with agency values and best practices. Key Responsibilities: Program Development and Operational Oversight: Lead the development, implementation, and refinement of the PES program, ensuring alignment with agency mission and regulatory standards. Evaluate workflows and clinical processes to improve efficiency, reduce delays, and enhance client outcomes. Review and analyze service metrics and program data to identify trends, track performance, and establish measurable goals. Support staff in achieving operational and clinical goals through training, coaching, and resource allocation. Identify areas for system-level improvement and initiate quality improvement initiatives. Clinical Oversight and Care Coordination: Provide oversight and ensure seamless coordination of care across the PES continuum, encompassing psychiatric evaluations, medication management, psychiatric consultations, behavioral health assessments, crisis intervention, nursing services, interdisciplinary collaboration, and comprehensive discharge and transition planning. Ensure person-centered assessment, crisis intervention, and referral services are integrated into treatment planning and that care is timely, collaborative, and evidence-based. Coordinate scheduling and coverage for psychiatrists, APRNs, and supporting clinical staff to ensure adequate staffing and continuity of care. Monitor adherence to best practices in crisis evaluation and brief intervention services, including but not limited to risk assessment, documentation, medication administration, engagement of natural supports and crisis de-escalation. Team Leadership and Supervision: Supervise PES Shift Supervisors and provide leadership to clinical staff involved in psychiatric emergency services. Advise and support shift supervisors on staffing concerns, including workload distribution, coverage gaps, and resource allocation to ensure safe and effective unit operations. Facilitate regular interdisciplinary team meetings and briefings to support communication and problem-solving. Conduct staff evaluations, assist in performance improvement planning, and support professional development. Serve as a role model for trauma-informed, recovery-oriented leadership and service delivery. Documentation and Compliance: Ensure completion of timely and accurate documentation of all psychiatric services in the electronic health record (EHR). Monitor for compliance with billing, audit, and documentation standards. Oversee the timely initiation and submission of CMO (Care Management Organization) authorizations and any other required payer documentation. Collaborate with Quality & Safety Coordinator to support accreditation and internal review processes. Interdisciplinary and External Collaboration: Act as a liaison between the psychiatric team and other internal departments, including medical, nursing, and administrative support services. Collaborate with community providers, hospitals, and external stakeholders to ensure seamless coordination of care and discharge planning. Represent PES in cross-functional workgroups and contribute to broader agency initiatives. Qualifications: Education and Licensure: Masters degree in Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Health Administration, or a related behavioral health field required. Active Georgia licensure in a clinical discipline required; preference given to candidates licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in psychiatric emergency, crisis stabilization, or acute behavioral health settings. At least 2 years in a leadership, supervisory, or management capacity. Skills and Competencies: Strong clinical knowledge of behavioral health crises, psychiatric interventions, and emergency mental health systems. Proven ability to lead and motivate multidisciplinary teams in high-pressure environments. Skilled in workflow analysis, program development, and implementation of performance improvement strategies. Knowledge of EHR systems, billing processes, documentation standards, and managed care practices. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders effectively. Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Fast-paced psychiatric emergency setting with potential exposure to individuals in acute distress. Frequent walking and direct engagement with staff and clients. Must be able to respond rapidly and appropriately in crisis or emergency situations.
