Description
The Assistant Director works under the supervision of the Aspen Opera Theatre & VocalARTS (AOTVA) Production Manager to provide support for AOTVA director(s) and artistic staff. The AOTVA program is under the co-artistic direction of Renée Fleming and Patrick Summers at the Aspen Music Festival & School (AMFS). The upcoming season will utilize the AMFS orchestras, the 2,050 seat Klein Music Tent, and Historic Wheeler Opera House throughout an encompassing 8-week summer season. This season’s mainstage productions will be Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Mozart’s Magic Flute. Responsibilities
Attend all rehearsals, performances, and meetings with the AOTVA directors, prepare scores/librettos, keep notes during rehearsals, and assist in creating the daily schedule with directors, stage management, and the company manager.
Liaise between directors and production staff to foster good communication and clear leadership, working toward the common goal of a successful rehearsal and tech process.
Provide administrative support for singers and faculty as needed.
Participate in pre-production meetings as requested.
Requirements
Proven ability to assist artistic and technical staff with efficiency, clarity, and grace while maintaining a supportive and collaborative atmosphere.
Flexibility, creativity, interpersonal skills, and strong administrative and practical understanding are required.
Strong knowledge/experience with Microsoft Office products. Experience with ArtsVision is a plus.
Candidates with prior opera AD or stage management experience will be given preference.
Candidates must be independently motivated, possess a sense of humor, be able to lift up to 30 lbs., and climb stairs and ladders comfortably.
DatesJune 15, 2026-August 24, 2026 Compensation
$18.50/hour plus housing provided by AMFS (valued at a minimum of $5.161/hour depending on location.) Overtime $27.75/hour Benefits
