About the Job PURPOSE STATEMENT:

The Director of Nursing is responsible and accountable for providing professional nursing care to clients. Directs, plans, coordinates, monitors and supervises the effective and efficient use of the operations of nursing and the safe delivery of behavioral health/nursing services with a positive, empathetic, and professional attitude. Ensures the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies, programs, and services consistent with the facility’s strategic goals and objectives.

Roles and Responsibilities

Set the vision for nursing practice and manage daily operations of nursing services.

Develop, maintain and implement nursing services, policies and procedures that conform to current standards and accrediting agencies.

Develop and interpret operational indicators to adjust staffing and resource allocation based on client acuity.

Lead a team of nursing staff through hiring, orienting, performance assessment, scheduling and coaching.

Make nursing diagnoses, consult with psychiatrists and other staff, coordinate care plans.

Participate in management team meetings to discuss client status and census changes.

Establish and monitor infection control program and safety.

Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to meet client needs.

Develop and implement health‑care related training.

Assist CEO with budget preparation, manage within approved budget, participate in strategic planning.

Maintain adequate inventory of supplies and equipment.

Oversee clinical records, statistics, reports for evaluation and reporting.

Stay informed about field changes and improve performance.

Help prepare for inspection survey and correction plans.

Monitor unit/floor functioning, intervene in crises, investigate incidents.

Assist with direct care as needed.

Audit medication room for compliance and reduce medication errors.

Education / Experience / Skill Requirements

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing (required). Master’s degree in psychiatric or mental health nursing preferred.

Five or more years’ experience in nursing practice (required). Three or more years’ psychiatric or behavioral health experience (required).

Ability to assess, plan and implement therapeutic nursing services in a multidisciplinary setting.

Skills in assessment, nursing principles, staffing, budgeting, employee management, regulatory requirements and documentation.

Licenses / Designations / Certifications

Valid current RN license from the state or from a compact state, where applicable.

Certified in Psychiatric Nursing preferred.

CPR certification and de‑escalation training required.

First aid may be required based on state or facility.

Supervisory Requirements Two or more years progressive managerial experience required.
