Steyer For Governor Tom Steyer is a Democrat running for Governor of California in 2026 to tackle the single biggest challenge we face as a state: the Californians who built this state and make this state run can’t afford to live in California anymore . Tom Steyer has a long record of standing up to powerful corporations—and winning—and now he’s running for governor to hold the companies driving up prices accountable, make them pay their fair share, and make California affordable again. We are building a statewide movement focused on lowering costs, expanding access to housing, reducing energy bills, and strengthening public education. If you’re driven by economic justice, motivated by big fights that matter, and eager to help build a campaign that puts people—not corporations—at the center of California’s future, join us.
The
Digital Director
will be responsible for establishing and executing a digital strategy for Tom Steyer for Governor. The Digital Director will report directly to the Campaign Manager and will be a key leader in shaping the campaign’s brand and driving awareness and engagement with voters across the state. The Digital Director is a creative and strategic leader who will build and manage a team of internal staff and external consultants to oversee brand/design, video, social media, editorial, email/SMS, digital organizing, and more. The ideal candidate is tenacious, innovative, and organized with the ability to both collaborate effectively across departments, manage a team, and work autonomously on various projects. They will also be skilled at translating campaign strategy and messaging into executable digital content, and utilizing non-traditional and emerging strategies to break through and engage with target online audiences.
Key Responsibilities
Digital Strategy & Leadership Develop and execute a comprehensive digital campaign strategy that aligns with the campaign’s goals, messaging, and overall objectives for communications and voter engagement. Advise the senior leadership and candidate on digital opportunities, risks, and emerging platforms and narratives. Manage, mentor, and lead the internal digital team and external consultants. Ensure the digital strategy brings the candidate's brand and core campaign messaging to key audiences online and is aligned with the broader campaign strategy. Content & Communications Oversee all digital content, including management of the campaign's website, social media accounts (e.g., X/Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Substack), and email/SMS program. Ensure the candidate’s and campaign’s voice online aligns with the message strategy and reaches key audiences. Drive a compelling digital storytelling effort to translate complex policy issues into accessible, engaging, and persuasive content for diverse California audiences. Direct the rapid-response digital strategy, creating and deploying strategies quickly in response to news cycles and opposition attacks. Oversee the production of high-quality digital assets, including video production, and graphic design, ensuring a digital-first and platform-specific approach. Online Engagement & Organizing Develop and implement strategies for digital organizing and mobilization, including list growth (email and SMS), volunteer recruitment, and driving online to offline actions. Manage the campaign’s use of digital tools and platforms (e.g., NGP/VAN) to integrate digital activities with eventual field operations and voter data. Identify, engage, and collaborate with influencers and key surrogates to engage target demographics. Analytics & Targeting Manage and track key digital performance metrics (KPIs) across all channels, providing regular, data-driven reports and recommendations for optimization to campaign leadership. Ensure compliance with all state and federal digital disclosure and data privacy requirements.
Qualifications, knowledge, and skills:
8+ years or 3 election cycles of experience managing digital communications and/or digital organizing for political campaigns, advocacy organizations, or elected officials. Experience working in electoral politics, large scale advocacy campaigning, or working at a creative agency on these types of campaigns. Proven ability to develop and execute a digital strategy under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Proven track record generating creative content and outcome-driven digital programs that engage target online audiences. Mastery of social media, from audience development to content creation, and a strong grasp on emerging platforms Exceptional written skills and an ability to moderate tone of voice across different platforms. Exceptional political judgment and demonstrated understanding of the political landscape in California. Strong team leadership and management skills, with experience overseeing staff and external vendors/consultants. Proficiency in digital content creation tools and platforms (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, video editing software) is a plus. Familiarity with political digital tools such as NGP/VAN, ActBlue, and various social media advertising platforms. Must be a self-starter, highly organized, and willing to work extended hours, including nights and weekends.
